Susan Collins is actually very concerned this time, rightfully, as the White House attempts to render congressional appropriations meaningless

This type of amateur hour data work is pure DOGE-era nonsense yet this administration keeps doing it. Because developing spurious accusations, not accuracy, is the whole mission of the Trump DHS
The data also includes what are known as alien identification numbers, the training video says, which are numbers assigned to a noncitizen that stay in their Homeland Security files permanently, even if they subsequently become citizens who are eligible to vote. If the investigation is using the existence of an alien number to flag that a voter is ineligible, many legal citizens are likely to be improperly ensnared as unlawful voters.

Conservatives are already lying and saying that this kicks undocumented immigrants off these tax credits. That is false, given you already need a valid social security number to claim them under last year's OBBBA. This almost entirely hurts only legal immigrants

Pretty wild ICE says they can tell whether someone is undocumented just by looking at them... Or maybe it's not that and they're just being racist www.nytimes.com/2026/08/11/u...

Remember when criminal justice reform, for people who had actually been convicted of a crime, was something we had agreement on? Now we have this truly evil garbage for immigrants and their families www.politico.com/news/2026/08...
Asked whether the administration had any concerns about the impact of its mass detention policy on the families of those held by ICE, particularly U.S. citizen spouses and children, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson responded simply: “No.

Well, this statement certainly has a big caveat... www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/n...
“ICE is committed to ensuring that all those in custody reside in safe, secure and humane environments,” the agency statement said. “At no time during detention is a detained noncitizen denied emergency care.”

Great summary from today's @garbageday.email newsletter on dating standards that applies I think a lot to politics too. A lot of online conversations are driven by people with the simple profit motive of getting engagement

This, from Matt Yglesias's latest newsletter on how higher immigration can reduce the deficit is a depressing way to see immigration policy. Immigrants have families too and uniting families is good for communities and the country. Viewing immigrants solely as workers and taxpayers is soulless

Today the House passed the ICE First Families Last Act. What a horrific Congress we have. Only one (semi) Republican voted no. Here's our statement

This is exactly how democracy is being unwound. In all areas of policy destruction, the Trump admin is acting so quickly that the courts cannot keep up in many circumstances.

Senator Kim brings up ICE arresting people at USCIS appointments and and raids at hospitals. Mullen is pretty non-commital, though said he supports law enforcement... Kim says he had to give his own father in law instructions in case he was detained when reentering the U.S.

Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Mullen again refuses to allow local law enforcement to investigate when ICE or CBP kill a U.S. citizen when asked by Sen. Hassan. This has been a major ask of Minnesota citizens

Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Sen. Peters makes it very clear that Republicans are holding hostage funding for TSA, FEMA and CISA in order to block negotiations on ICE/CBP reforms.

Slotkin brings up election deniers. Mullen refuses to say that Biden won the 2020 election. He also refuses to rule out putting DHS officers at polling places (claiming there could be a threat, except what type of DHS officers respond to threats of that kind?! They aren't the FBI)
101
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Sen. Slotkin raises ICE violence and racial profiling, and asks Mullen what he would be willing to do to reform ICE and regain trust. He seems to blame local law enforcement for ICE's actions and say there doesn't need to be a new law. Slotkin doesn't agree.

Senator Fetterman says how proud he is to have cosponsored the Laken Riley Act, which allows for immigrants to be jailed without the possibility of bond. Many Democrats have said how much they regret voting for it. Supporting that law at this point in the Trump administration is unconscionable

Senator Kim raises, like Hassan, how ICE is buying up warehouses to turn into prisons despite local opposition. Mullen says that community should be consulted on impact. Given Miller seems to be trying to spend the reconciliation slush funds as soon as possible, I feel doubtful, again.

Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Blumenthal also asks about ICE breaking into people's house, without warrants. He asks Mullen if ICE will stop doing so. Mullen says that he will do so, unless they're pursuing someone. Color be dubious. When asked about how ICE are trained on this, he is less clear
101
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Blumenthal asks whether Mullen will implement ICE quotas set by Steven Miller. Mullen seems to have little to say, basically that he would do what he's told
112
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Hassan asks whether he will push forward with the ICE prison warehouse in NH that their Republican governor got cancelled after outrage in the state. Mullen doesn't say whether he would do so or not, or if he would open warehouses in the face of local opposition
101
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
In a back and forth with Hassan, Mullen claims he'll operate under the laws, but then resorts back to the "just enforcing the laws" claim that Noem used to defend her chaotic violence I'm not feeling confident in this, given he just claimed Trump would never ask him to break the law, feels dubious
101
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Hassan correct the record, ICE has more money than god right now and Dems are totally willing to fund other DHS components

Peters asks Mullen about his disparaging and blaming of Good and Pretti, including calling Pretti "deranged". Mullen says he shouldn't have said that and regrets it. Though he refuses to apologize to Pretti's family due to the "investigation"
101
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Sen. Peter's kicks off by asking Mullen about his claims to be involved in overseas "special security forces." "Other than vacations with your family, have you ever traveled to another country" "No." Though sounds like he went as a Senator to some countries later. But is this stolen valor?
101
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
"Is that your opinion, that political disputes can only be solved by violence?" "No, I don't always believe that" And then Mullen claims that repeating his own words is character assassination🤪 And then goes on to support political duals??? Like the caning of Sumner? Good god this is WILD
101
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Mullen at least differentiates himself from Noem by saying he can admit when he makes mistakes... right after refusing to apologize for basically supporting violence against Paul
111
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
As Mullen gives his opening, he tried to defend his own nasty words around Paul but doesn't seem to express much remorse and pretty much insults him. With a lot of head shaking and frowns, Paul doesn't seem to be very pleased 👀

Booker also brought up the prison warehouses ICE is buying up, which haven't gotten nearly enough attention. One in NJ cost $129m but was assessed for half of that and was opposed by local Republican-elected officials. As a reminder, this is money ICE got because Congress cut Medicaid

Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
@booker.senate.gov calls out ICE for raiding schools and bus stops. Noem tries to deny that they conduct immigration enforcement there but he has receipts.

Ha boy, Tillis gets into how Noem's proud story about killing her dog and goat illustrate how she can't admit to making mistakes but is in fact deeply inexperienced in all she attempts. He finishes by saying she's been blocking oversight investigations and needs to resign

Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Tillis TEARS INTO Noem. He doesn't ask her a question but instead, truly pissed off, goes into the disaster of ICE's indiscriminate enforcement and culture of Miller's rhetoric. There are very much both Democrats and Republicans who are pretty pissed about Noem's leadership.

Senator Hirono calls out instances of violence and then directly ties it into the lies and permissive lawless from DHS and WH leadership

Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
@hirono.senate.gov also raised our lawsuit about Guatemalan children who are supposed to be protected from deportation and how DHS lied about why they were doing it. Noem refuses to admit they lied, again, blaming "activist judges" for their failures
100
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Blumenthal also raises the Lyon memo, that allows ICE raids without judicial warrants. She defends their use of administrative warrants.
100
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
@blumenthal.senate.gov says DHS admitted to him that they have arrested and detained dozens of U.S. citizens. Three of them are in the hearing room. Noem refuses to say that ICE arresting citizens, targeting someone because they look "Mexican," or shooting people in their cars is wrong.
100
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Also responding to @coons.senate.gov, Noem refuses to rule out ICE at election polling places, though she claims there are no plans for it (blaming immigrants for voting for if they did)
100
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Oh my god. Not only did Noem refuse to apologize to Alex Pretti's parents for calling him a domestic terrorist, she plays semantics saying, no, she never did that, she said it was an "incident of domestic terrorism."
100
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Noem refuses to admit anything was wrong when ChongLY Thao's door was rammed in by ICE and he was dragged, in his underwear, into subzero temperatures. She says they needed to "identify" him. Abhorrent.
110
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Responding to @klobuchar.senate.gov Noem affirms there are still 600+ agents in MN. The so-called drawdown, of course, is not reality, and she continues to falsely blame "fraud" for their presence. Of course, fraud is perpetuated by government contractors, not immigrants.
100
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Also very interesting, Kennedy is unhappy that Noem blamed the "domestic terrorism" comments around the MN killings on Steven Miller. And she tries to blame "annonymous sources" and gets corrected, she said it on the record. This Secretary seems to be not very popular right now
100
Ben D’Avanzo @bendavanzo.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Very interesting, Noem comes under criticism from Sen. Kennedy (R-LA) about $220m of taxpayer dollars spent on DHS TV ads that feature Noem. And it was apparently some people with ties to her who got the contract (she blamed "subcontractors" for that). Kennedy doubts Trump would approve
