As I understand it, if his seat goes vacant early enough, the governor appoints a stand-in until a vote can be cast to replace him, and the current governor of Kentucky is a Democrat. So that's why it's actually frustrating that Beshear hasn't been more forceful in pushing for proof or replacement.

Canopies were an effective solution to cabin overheating in sunny areas like Doha, Qatar, two decades ago. Putting solar panels up as the canopy has to be another old solution that should have been put into common use long ago. Excellent vision for a future America...

The first documentable sea route for silver would have been during the British East India Tea Company’s era. Meaning it had to go through Europe to get to China. This premise alone supports the idea of large price impacts on silver on the continent.

Also, Japan during the period before the Sakoku shutdown in 1635 was in a warring states period. It wouldn’t be a likely source for silver to China. And the Manila Galleon was a large exporter but not the largest by far for New Spain’s silver…

There was no historically visible treasure fleet that regularly went from Spain to the Far East. In the period, Eurasia was a mess with the Mongol collapse and the rise of Muscovy, and a hostile Ottoman Empire blocked direct commerce eastward…

My sense, after these, is that while it’s true that China probably did end up as the end recipient of a large percentage of New Spain’s silver, most of it didn’t arrive very quickly. To get there, it had to have a means of conveyance…

A certain amount of the silver might well have gone onward to India and China... China refused any trade other than precious metals, but there was still a noticeable impact in Europe, which suggests not all of it went onward.

Ben Angel @ben3angel.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
The problem that comes to mind in that theory is that the main transport for silver coming from northern New Spain (Mexico) was the treasure fleet that sailed out of Veracruz. There was a considerably smaller group of ships that sailed to Manila out of SanBlas, but it was nowhere near the same size.

Ben Angel @ben3angel.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Always open to different perspectives, but most analyses seem to indicate that the arrival of so much silver from the New World had a rather monumental impact on European markets. This of course was back in the day when commerce was dependent on local scarcity. Could you summarize your perspective?

That's probably not dissimilar from the other varieties as it was always been about the dried rat excretion dust. (Bear Hunt was out in the open, so the dust landing on MREs was more a danger than in the Betsy Arakawa case, where she was in an enclosed space.)

Looks kind of like it's area is more closely tied to northern Patagonia, at least what I can pick up from online sources (Neuquen, Rio Negro, Chubut). The guy who brought it onto the boat apparently went from there to Ushuaia in the far south to board. I guess this strain is more resp than renal...

It is baffling. Transmission in 1986 was clearly through rodent droppings. We were advised to minimize exposure of MREs to dust, and the area where the victims were was in just one section of camp. 2007 was the same. Perhaps it's now communicated through touch? Will have to follow more closely...

The Andes variant is new (just as the variant that hit New Mexico before 2007 was new - it was a concern for construction in Chaco Canyon), and yeah, that is the worry that it could now be communicated person-to-person. I've not seen if that's been confirmed (but haven't followed the news closely).

It's spread by the dust of rat droppings. That means any area that is dry enough where rat poop desacates & disintegrates to dust is susceptible, including NM. (My military unit was one of the first American units, or Americans, period, to encounter it during Bear Hunt 1986 at Uncheon, South Korea.)
