I've had the privilege of working directly with @padilla.senate.gov and his staff on environmental protections, on internet and tech policy, and other issues. I know first hand that he is one of the good guys, watching him get tackled and restrained while doing his job for his voters is horrifying.

The Trump Administration has yet to make a decision on the #ChuckwallaNationalMonument. But one thing is certain: if the designation is rescinded, we’ll fight like hell to defend it.

This is where I work. We're looking for new Flickr Commons members, preferably in the places where we don't have members already. Do you know someone and could you put me in touch? Thank you.

I also met again with @repgabevasquez.bsky.social to support the critical #publiclands projects he is sponsoring and championing. I can't say enough good things about Congressman Vasquez and the work he is doing to protect our landscapes and provide community access.

In DC today, working on #publiclands with some of the best Congress Reps we have. I finally got to show @repraulruizmd.bsky.social my Chuckwalla National Monument tattoo, celebrating the amazing work he's done getting it designated. He's a true champion, there are good people fighting for us.

And yet here we are again. They are under threat of tremendously destructive industrial expansion. So we're back at it. Watch our newest short film: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7g6... Alaska is a place where we can still get it right.

And it all worked! The surveys were completed, the protections were restored. Cheers were had, happy tears were shed. What a tremendous victory. 28 million acres! That's about the size of Pennsylvania!

We released a short film about the village of Igiugig, and how the lifting of these protections would impact their traditional way of life. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XeP...

This is a campaign we've worked on for years. For almost 60 years, these lands have had successful management and protection. Those protections were stripped away little over 4 years ago. We worked closely with the DOI to advocate for environmental surveys, and restored protections.

Today we've (re)launched a campaign to protect 28 Million acres in Alaska, a partnership with Flickr, The Conservation Alliance, SalmonState, and Wild Salmon Center. Read more about what we're working on, and watch our short film here: protectalaskawildlands.com I'll add some context in thread.

Tired of Instagram? Photographers Flock Back to Flickr for the Love of Photos
Are you fed up with Instagram’s algorithms and TikTok’s endless videos? You’re not alone. There’s a growing movement in the photography community: people are returning to Flickr, an “old-school” photo...

Yeah, definitely sustainable now. Plenty of work still to do, and always will be but headed the right direction!

It was good year over on Flickr. Check out the fun review: www.flickr.com/year-in-revi... Most surprising to me? Mammoth Cave National Park was the top National Park this year. It wasn't even on my radar before, time to go down a wikipedia rabbit hole!

Okay, after last week's weather disaster in SoCal, I finally got to show my Chuckwalla tattoo and celebrate the new National Monument. Starting with the President Biden photo from tonight, because he's protected more of our public land and water than ANY other president in history.

We're also pretty fierce defenders of the older and more open internet. So with decentralization, I'd rather be an amazing community of photographers that works with the other broader communities. I don't want to lock every single person into our community like instagram. 🤷
020
Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 11/01/2025
but I don't think we're really an instagram replacement, and I don't think we want to be. We'll always be somewhat niche. I don't think there are billions of people who love photography, and sharing that art. We've proven there are tens of millions, maybe hundreds. I'm okay with that.

Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 11/01/2025
If you love taking photos for the sake of taking and sharing photos, Flickr is a wonderful place. We're healthy, growing, and still beloved by the community. We're also 1% For the Planet, Change Climate Certified, certified Great Place to Work, Certified Evergreen, all the cool stuff.

Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 11/01/2025
I see a lot of Flickr chatter in the wake of Meta news. Obviously we'd love to welcome photographers to the community. We're not Instagram though, and don't want to be. We're not looking for gym selfies and influencer lifestyles. We build for people who love photography. (more)

I have a few connections. 😆 It’s 1000 photos free at the free tier, which we can definitely debate. But I am a strong advocate for privacy, and hate heavy handed advertising. So I don’t see a dramatic shift in business model happening. Flickr is mildly profitable, sustainable for ever, and growing.

Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 11/01/2025
but that might be the end of the POTUS account on Flickr? At least for now. 🤷
010
Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 11/01/2025
I probably shouldn't say this publicly, but I don't think the incoming administration has asked about migrating the POTUS account? We transitioned to and from the last Trump administration, so we'd obviously be happy to help them share their photography. The public record is important.

Thanks for the page! This is WAY more productive paging @don.flickr . I mean, I'm familiar with it... but he's.... intimate(?) with it. I will say, there have been some internal hackathons with ActivityPub. I'm less familiar with atproto, which is why I'm using my lifeline to call a friend.

Oh no! I kind of want to seriously try now. 😆 I haven't personally reviewed every avenue possible these days, but our team has spent more than 6 years working on ways to help people get back in.

Well if you want to make a run at it, let me know and I can see how we can help. Yahoo login is the gift that keeps giving. 🤡

I'll be the first to admit we've still got a few decades more of work to do on pain points though. 😬

Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 07/01/2025
Fair, I understand. Especially when everything online is "free." Flickr was losing so much that even Verizon wanted to just delete it. We're basically break even on it, which is AWESOME and can be run forever. But limits/subs are how we run a business without being ethically gross.

There's a reasonable chance we can get you back in and out of your Yahoo hell. Flickr's growing and thriving, despite Yahoo's best efforts. We have a great support team (first thing we did after buying Flickr), they can help probably.
000
Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 07/01/2025
The very first thing we did when we bought it was to build a proper support team. Have you tried them to get in? I know how painful trying to get out of Yahoo hell and back into Flickr is. Trust me, I know and there are limits to what we can do. 🫠 We'd love to help though if you haven't tried us!

Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 07/01/2025
Thriving and growing, post Yahoo! Pretty close to all time peak usage, but it's a lot more dispersed globally. Back in the early days, it was all us North America peeps.

Still here, still growing and thriving (post-Yahoo). Tens of millions of photographers. Not billions, and I think I'm happy with that? 🤷

Never give up. Never surrender. (PS- Flickr is growing and thriving)

Ben MacAskill @ben.flickr · 07/01/2025
We're really not dead over here, I promise. It's been thriving and growing for years post-Yahoo. I do wonder how many people put in work to find people initially, and don't want to put in work to find more people again in thinking about returning. We could definitely do better w/ new recs.

Lastly, this move today for Chuckwalla and also Sáttítla Highlands National Monument in Northern California cement President Biden as the president who has protected more land and water for future generations than any other that's come before him. Bravo. ❤️

This is such a huge win. 644,000 (!!!!) acres protected in Chuckwalla National Monument. These lands are part of the sacred homelands of the Cahuilla, Chemehuevi, Mohave, Quechan and Serrano tribes. It also expands Joshua Tree National Park by 16,000 acres!

In my many visits to DC to advocate for protections, I made the bold promise to @repraulruizmd.bsky.social directly that I would get a Chuckwalla lizard tattoo if we made it. Congressman Ruiz, I hoped to show you today!

This is a project I've worked on for years now. Both in my role at Flickr, and with my board position with The Conservation Alliance. My first visit to Chuckwalla changed my life, and I was determined to do anything I could to secure protections.

Today, President Biden designated Chuckwalla National Monument. I was invited to the ceremony this morning in Chuckwalla, which sadly got canceled due to dangerous weather. This is a huge and important conservation win, and one that's super personal to me. (thread) (photo by me, in Chuckwalla)

I'm matching $5k of donations through the end of the year. We're about $2.5k short of our goal currently. If you think public lands are important, and especially if you think historically excluded communities should have outdoor access then maybe donate? mailchi.mp/nuestra-tier...

I totally understand. I'm significantly immunocompromised. But even without that, it's not hard to understand how to be a human being to the people around you. The fucked up thing about our current system is that it is bad for employees, AND bad for most businesses. 🫠
