Hero has been at the zoo for 10 years and was lovingly raised by our Animal Management Department. He came to us as a tiny cub after being confiscated from a young man in the Toledo District. Although Hero isn’t seen by the public, he plays a vital role behind the scenes.

“Won’t he fly away?” is one of the most common questions we hear from guests when they see Ranger the scarlet macaw perched outside his habitat. Ranger was rescued after being found on the ground with a congenital wing deformity that prevents him from flying.
