In her #SOTEU speech von der Leyen did not once mention the unprecedented chemical pollution crisis from pesticides and harmful chemicals such as PFAS (forever chemicals), which are impacting people's health and the environment on a daily basis. Check out what @vickycann.bsky.social has to say
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A black-and-white photo of Vicky Cann, researcher and campaigner, appears on the right. The quote reads: 'In her State of the Union speech Ursula von der Leyen did not once mention the unprecedented chemical pollution crisis from pesticides and harmful chemicals such as PFAS (forever chemicals), which are impacting people's health and the environment on a daily basis. She cannot cover all topics? Well, health and nature are the very basis of any progress including economic, and AI will not impact on this reality one iota. For more than one year VDL has refused to talk to people from PFAS-affected communities - this is very telling indeed. It is vital that her Commission prioritises a comprehensive universal ban on PFAS in both consumer and industrial uses; and abandons the Food and Feed Omnibus which threatens to worsen pesticide pollution.'

This summer's heatwaves killed more than 35,000 extra people across Europe, mostly elderly and low-income. Von der Leyen's response in her State of the Union? "We must capture this market." Sustained public investment is what's needed. A market opportunity is what von der Leyen offers.
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A black-and-white photo of Pascoe Sabido, researcher and campaigner, appears on the right. The quote reads: 'Curbing global heating is not a win-win or a business opportunity and requires tough measures like phasing out fossil fuels. That's why Europe's oil and gas industry has fought them tooth and nail. But this speech gives that industry and its allies a helping hand by announcing it will speed up permitting approvals and slash so-called administrative burdens. Those so-called burdens are in fact laws that protect our air and water quality, and speeding up permitting will stop communities being able to say no to new gas pipelines or energy-guzzling data centres. This undermines climate action but also tramples on local democracy. By the end of this Parliament, expect to see record deaths from global heating and record low trust in Europe’s political class.

Wild idea: what if the Commission listened to civil society and independent scientists instead of the usual corporate suspects? 🙃 While industry lobbies tighten their grip, progress on climate, pollution and digital rights is being chipped away. That's not competitiveness. That's capture.
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A black-and-white photo of Kenneth Haar, researcher and campaigner, appears on the right. The quote reads: 'Clearly, Ursula von der Leyen takes great pride in the deregulation campaign she has launched under the pretext of simplification. Her problem is, that the EU cannot address the climate crisis or handle the risks from AI if it keeps going the way of omnibuses and deregulation. The plan to do a pact against gold-plating is much more dangerous than it sounds. Corporate lobby groups will eye this as an opportunity to bring down ambitious environmental policies and social standards at the member state level. This could evolve into a deregulation drive going berserk.'

#SOTEU : while Europe faces social, environmental and geopolitical pressures, it's funny how the solution always happens to be exactly what corporate lobbyists have been asking for, and they already have more access to EU decision-making than anyone. Here's our take on AI, deregulation and climate👇
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A black-and-white photo of Bram Vranken, researcher and campaigner, appears on the right. The quote reads: 'Never before has the call for regulating AI been stronger. But instead of enforcing EU rules to keep unaccountable tech companies in check, the EU is intent on slashing data protection and rules on AI. Ironically, in her State of the Union, von der Leyen claims the importance of guardrails, but ignores the fact that the EU Commission has teamed up with the tech industry to deregulate the digital rule-book.

Every single article about AI use in a critical context goes something like this "yeah, it's great, it does the job really well, no complaints. It does catastrophically fail about 35% of the time though, so good to check" So many people have just lost all sense www.nrk.no/vestfoldogte...
It has become common for KI assistants to listen and take notes during doctor visits, and GP Mathias Krüger is clear about how useful it is.

– They do the actual writing job incredibly well. They are trained in medical language, understand what tests are being done, and you get a note that looks very neat and tidy. It's a big help, says the GP.

At the same time, he is concerned about how important it is to carefully read what the AI tool writes before it ends up in a patient record.

– They are certainly not perfect. They misunderstand medications and context. They misunderstand who is involved. For example, it may say "mother is involved," but it is actually a completely different person.
