Sometimes on campus, like this morning, I can hear the "go to class" chime for the nearby high school, and it always reminds me of Hilda encountering a school: "They live in fear of bells, Mum!"
Freeze frame from Hilda. She pets Twig and says "Mum, I'm telling you, those poor Trolberg kids live in fear of bells"

I'm having my students make chemistry zines for their final projects this semester. Because it amused me, I gave them the zine project guidelines *as a hand-drawn zine*
A little stapleless folded zine booklet titled "We're making chemistry zines" with a sketch of a zine with a molecule on it. The lettering is a little bit crooked and off-center. This zine proclaims itself handmade by Dr. Haas, and in the photo it's held in Dr. Haas's hand

This is an appreciation post for the best wedding favor My cousin got married to their longtime partner in 2019, and at the reception the drinks were served in mason jar mugs like this is one. Guests were encouraged to take their mug as a favor, and we […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

An amusing juxtaposition about the moon
A screenshot of my mastodon app showing two posts. The post at the top is from Gooder Living and says "The moon has been showing everyone the same face for billions of years and somehow still gets called mysterious. You don't have to reinvent yourself every week. Sometimes consistency is the interesting part."
The post beneath is from Samer Farha and shows a photo of the moon as seen through a telescope

[Food (baking & dessert)] I had some leftover egg whites to use, so a couple days ago I made them into a meringue for pavlova. I like to put fresh fruit on top, but all we had were a few raspberries & blackberries, and I don't like the seeds with the […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

[Food] One of my goals for this summer was to get better at making macarons. These are looking pretty good! The shells are walnut, the filling is a quick fig jam, and they're delicious
About 2 dozen macarons set on their sides in a glass dish. The macaron shells are light brown and slightly speckled with crinkly looking "feet." Sandwiched between each pair of shells is a dollop of dark red-brown jam.

A rounded rectangle of blue denim attached to the knee of jeans in a slightly different shade and orientation of denim. The edge of the patch is covered in close looped stitches of embroidery floss in six gem tones that make a clockwise rainbow, starting with a pinkish red in the five o'clock position, then a short stretch of vivid orange, golden yellow along the left edge, emerald green, slightly-greener-than-sapphire blue, and ending with lavender on the right

[food] Kid1 loves gyoza and asked if we could make them, so this weekend we gave it a try. My folding needs practice, and I haven't quite gotten the hang of the timing so the bottoms get crisp without getting entirely stuck to the pan, but I think they came […] [Original post on wandering.shop]
A plate of gyoza-style dumplings with browned bottoms and steamed sides. This is not fancy plating, just a chaotic heap left the way the dumplings fell as they tumbled out of the pan. Flecks of green and orange filling can be seen through the somewhat translucent dumpling wrappers

Last night's storm has left everything coated in ice. It reminds me of the ice storms we had in February 2011, back when we lived in Michigan. We had one storm that coated the trees in wide flakey crystals followed a couple weeks later by a storm that seemed […] [Original post on wandering.shop]
The end of a bare wintry tree branch encased in ice thicker than the branch itself. The tips of the branch are rounded by the ice, except for one long curling twig that appears to have frozen in the middle of whipping back. Its length curls back toward the tree's trunk and the ice forms a point at the tip like a scorpion's tail. The background is a blue gradient of cloudless sky, and glimmers of sunshine reflect off the curves in the ice, contrasting with the dark brown bark of the branch

[uspol, fashy guy running for Congress] Anthony Constantino, the CEO of #StickerMule, is running for Congress and my household received a mailer from his campaign. If I didn't already know that the company supports #fascism, the big fashy image on one side […] [Original post on wandering.shop]
Mailer from Constantino for Congress. It's a stylized portrait of a white guy in a white shirt and blue suit jacket, without a tie, in front of a gritty looking American flag (but only 14 stars are visible over his shoulder). He looks like he's both smug and scowling at the same time, trying to be serious but mostly giving Nazi vibes. His hands are clasped in front of him, and he's wearing a heavy chain bracelet on one wrist. It might be AI generated because his head and hands look too big for his body, the neck of his shirt seems impossibly twisted, and his fingers look strange, but they're partially covered by the "paid for" disclaimer box, so it's hard to tell.

I inherited some crocheted snowflake ornaments from my grandmothers, and I love the look of them. This year I decided to try making some of my own. I tried two different "beginner" patterns that I could not for the life of me figure out, so I decided to wing […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

I saw this at work and did a double-take. What is rink mix? A beverage so artificial it can't be called a drink anymore? It's a typo nobody caught before they printed thousands of boxes

Wise words from Dr. Della Mosley. Her newsletter (The Healing Current) is often a highlight of my inbox www.academics4blacklives.com Caring is a radical act
Text reads: Many of us have been taught that exhaustion is excellence, that to care for ourselves is to betray the work. But what if healing is the work? What if rest is how we refuse to be consumed? What if softness is one of the most radical things we can practice in a system built on our burnout?
