Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

throwing this out there in desperation -- does anyone have any idea how to get filled polygons with no border lines in ggplot2 with geom_sf()? this used to be possible because i did it all the time by setting colour = NA but now i get lines between adjacent polygons and it looks awful #rstats
ggplot2 image output of a grid of 100x100 unit squares that share corners and align perfectly. The image should be perfectly black since the polygons are right next to each other, but between each square there is a pixel-width line of transparency. It looks weird and creates inconsistent effects as you zoom in and out.

I know this used to work! I've also tried linewidth, linetype, and gone through the docs and years of stackoverflow...

To reproduce:

library(sf)
  st_square <- function(x, y) {
    sf::st_polygon(
      x = list(
        matrix(
          data = c(
            x, y,
            x, y + 1,
            x + 1, y + 1,
            x + 1, y,
            x, y
          ),
          ncol = 2,
          byrow = TRUE
        )
      )
    )
  }

  many_squares <- purrr::map(1:100, \(x) {
    purrr::map(1:100, \(y) {
      st_square(x, y)
    })
  }) |> unlist(recursive = FALSE) |>
    sf::st_sfc()

  many_squares |>
    ggplot2::ggplot() +
    ggplot2::geom_sf(fill = "black", colour = NA) +
    ggplot2::theme_void()

    ggplot2::ggsave("manysquares.png")
