(Saudade and Her Girls) the worst part about sharing intentional humour is you have to claim with your full chest that you think it's funny. so, uh, here we go. have some Ester pov fun, featuring Tera, a truck, and an oblivious Susanna just outside the vehicle. #LGBTQWriteAThon

“Yeah. You and Resa I expected to get along with better, I think. Susa’s been surprisingly good this past week too.” It feels weird that I want to spend more time with these people. Susa was meant to be my hostage, or something, but I find myself almost forgetting that I am here in Libertopolis for myself and not a part of her merry band of escapists.
Tera’s face is a terrifying grin. Borderline killer. Predator pouncing on prey. She and Resa can be fucking scary when they want to be. “Susa, eh?”
“Oh piss off.”
“No I will not. Since when is she Susa?”
“Calling her Susanna was a mouthful. Leave me alone.”
“It’s three syllables. Resa calls her Susanna all the time.”
“Yeah, well, they’re the couple aren’t they? Wait, you call her Suz!”
“I’ve always called her Suz. It’s my thing. You changed. What, one pat from an aristocrat is all it takes to betray your socialism?”
I slide down into the leather seat, like melting ice in Summer. “Maybe it’s for the best that we’re splitting soon.”
From outside the truck, Susa—Susanna looks confused as she catches Tera’s barking laughter behind me, shaking the truck from side to side. I mouth kill me through the window.

After saying they were headed over to Libertopolis, that’s when it all connected in my head. The jacked woman and the manly-haired redhead should have given it away, but I can be quite dense about these things, admittedly!

Poor girls. Can’t be easy living like they do up there under Ziegler’s thumb. Never seen a group like them though, always thought it was a one-on-one thing like with a guy and a girl. But I’m no lesbian, so what do I know. I’ll confess to being a bit curious, but they were already so tired, being led away by our girls, I didn’t have the courage to say nothing.

“I need your permission. I cannot trust myself without explicit permission. If it displeases you…” I ponder this for a second. “I will throw myself at your feet for a thousand years. Bequeath my soul and all such things to you, a permanent monopoly over my affairs until you deem my sentence complete.”
“Okay, big girl,” she says, as though I do not mean every word that I say! “What do you need?”
“It’s Ester. She will be out of our lives soon and I have reason to believe I have grown something of an affection—” Too verbose, I’m compensating for the alcohol. Steel. I am steel. “Catarina said she thought we were all already ‘a thing’. Can we be? Us three? She can come with us! No need to worry about your share of my stocks, I, I can split my share in half! Done! And, and no pressure for Tera, if you would like to consult her, though I certainly wouldn’t mind, and I wouldn’t mind also—t-that is, it’s her choice too I imagine, and in all likelihood she still hates me, as is her right, so. So. So. Thoughts? Critiques? Feedback? Rating between one and—”

But instead of forming any more words, terrible, traitorous words, her hand catches my chin, bringing my lips into hers. “Susanna,” she says, “slow down. Can you do that for me?”
“Mhm.” I nod slowly. It’s less straight than I intend.
“Okay. Well, I see how Ester looks at you. How she looks at us too. I think she might like it. I think I might like it. So, why not?”

(Saudade and Her Girls) remember when I said Alicia sucks? well, she does. she's also, sometimes, fun to write. (also the word north appears hundreds of times in the text for Civil War reasons, it took a bit to find one I thought worked without much context lol)

My throat catches against what I want to say. She’s not… of course she is. Fascist freak. “You were going to burn the city down if we didn’t help you.”
“What an optimistic use of the past tense.” Alicia grins, causing her to chew into the cig between her teeth. “It’s a last resort. A dead man’s switch. Anything happens to me, to the gold, to my… person of interest, let us say, then we will all walk together across the veil, crisp hand in crisp hand. If I get what I want, nothing happens. It’ll just be a large donation from your friends up north.”
“Yeah, right. You could still burn it down even if you got Ester. There’s no winning here.”
“Say, you’re right! I could!” she says, excited that I reached her conclusion for her. “So, if your best case is also your worst, wouldn’t it be a weight off your conscience if at least one person survived? What about two? You socialists are all godless utilitarians, you tell me what the correct course of action is. Now, ready to continue, comrade?”

Saudade and Her Girls features many kinds of girls. meet Alicia, the antagonist of our story. she suuuuucks. meet Susanna, pictured here having the second worst morning of her life.

“Apologies for my rudeness, I felt it would be cruel to not inform seu Cesare here of his responsibilities. I did not mean to interrupt whatever conversation you two were having, senhora…?”
“S-Susanna. Lady Susanna.” What use was there to lie? Lord knows Cesare would not join my group’s conspiracy. Nonetheless, I swallow no small amount self-loathing as I offer up my name to the officer.
“Ha! No need to be so rigid. You seem like too sweet a woman to be the target of any Oversight operation.” Suddenly my outfit feels too garish and ostentatious; as though I were wearing massive neon sign about my neck, saying: Transsexual here!
“Naturally, officer Campos.”

She extends her hand. “Please, officer Alicia, your ladyship.” I suppose that is a little more familiar, but to still insist upon the title?
I accept it, placing mine into hers. “And what might this operation be? Hardly every day one sees an OO take interest in taxation.”
Her hands retreat into a lock behind her back. It does not give the illusion of deference, however, but one of attention and competence. “A curious spirit aren’t you, my dear? Perhaps I should take you on under my wing.” Smirk.
I have spent far too long in this hotel to be put off-guard by this one. And more than enough time staring in the mirror this morning besides! Admittedly, I briefly consider a universe where this was not the case and I felt somehow charmed by a Rebel officer’s compliments. My stomach falls further into my gut at the thought. “I have my charms beyond the surface layer.”

favourite prose bit, favourite joke

It's been five years now but sometimes - times like now - it feels like The Great War never ended. I don't like to reminisce on them - explosions. I don't like to think about sheltering in doorways and basements while the Allies enjoyed uncontested skies. Knowing that the Empire might finally bite the dust, but at the cost of me and my shitty apartment. Darts being tossed at a dart board and there's poor little me hiding on the outer single ring (one point).

IDA: "You didn't just walk out without paying did you."
THEO: "Heh. Well you might claim that but I couldn't possibly comment. Important thing is I left behind one of those 'An Ost-Alpinan Kommunist Shopped Here' cards we had printed. Anyway, I'm off to forage. Survival skills are important all year round, nbut it's times like this they really pay.

some of my recent favourite lines I can't post because they're in-submission or massive spoilers, but this is a good contender, I think! from my wip novel Saudade and Her Girls: (TW for internalised transphobia in screenshots 1 & 2 but it's sweet by the last one I promise!)

“Then it’s fine! Nothing happened! You didn’t—”
“Don’t you dare.” I am on the verge of shouting now, but I do not care. It is totally incommensurate with what she said, but her forgiveness is unearned. It is unfair to her. She needs to know this. She must not understand otherwise why would she forgive me? “Does this not scare you? It scares me! I could fall for another so easily, that’s what Cesare taught me. As if anything about me was normal before! Now there’s this klepto-amorous hole in me. My love is cursed to be an ocean wide and a foot deep. How can I be certain I’ll cherish it? That I won’t take you for granted? And, and…” What lies in my heart still, scares me. That I want Resa, I truly do, but can I trust myself to…
What’s wrong, little girl? Too afraid to name the sources of your woes? It’s so easy to pretend this is an intellectual exercise, in the realm of hypotheticals. So demure, yet so completely lecherous.

Hypocrite. Selfish little princess never has enough. Not enough to be given a roadmap for how to become a lady, something she isn’t even supposed to want. She must find her own way through, yes? Her own third way. Then she has the gall to demand to be treated as a woman still, despite her half-efforts.
Next, she realises her life is so devoid of interiority that she invents a reason to go outside. It is so much more fun being there than in that dead man’s manor! See! See her smile as they all bow down to her wishes and fantasises. The whole world must be party to it, to say she is pretty and there is none like her. Her kink. How many makes a world? Three? Four? More? Satisfied? No? No, of course not. Because then she will feel bad about it, for she is fragile. Now she’s afraid the good feeling will wilt because she cannot nurture it without being harassed. Destined to pick roses and behead gardens, letting them fall to the floor once she can no longer carry them. A selfish lover.
Greedy chimera. Silly girl. Greedy. Silly. Girl. That’s all I am.

My hands obscure my face, my fingers grabbing and tugging at the tips of my bangs. No tears, not yet, but the willpower it takes to maintain my pride drains me terribly. A weak shell by the edge of a cliff, about to fall, leaving naught but a stillborn chick. Rent a shuddering mess.
But then Resa returns with her embrace, twice as strong as before. She shushes me, as I surrender into her cocoon. She’s warm, is my first thought. Like a dim furnace. One might think her muscles would feel rough, and that is somewhat true. Yet there is a comfort in it. As though there was this impregnable barrier about you for this tender moment. You are free from the world, yet still accompanied and cherished.
“I love you,” she says. But not simply, she says it like she is offering an answer. I take it apart in my head, like folding and unfolding fine origami. Who do you love? I love you. Am I enough? I love you. But what if—? I love you. It catches me off-guard. It is so simple, so basic and pure I have no recourse. It is a simple reflexive motion as I grab her tank top by the collar, yank her to my level, and kiss her with all I have.
