You can say that language production is not evidence of intelligence, but then you have to bite the bullet that language production is not evidence of intelligence

Oscilloscopes usually have some way of making "coarse" and "fine" scale adjustments. Sometimes 2 different knobs, sometimes a mode button that changes the behaviour of one knob, or even even +/- powers of 10 sensitivity. Could be a rich source of interface ideas.

"Thus, foraging at depths exceeding 3,000 m would be too physiologically taxing for beaked whales and may heighten the risk of fatal exhaustion or decompression sickness. Ultimately, the V-shaped topography of the Diamantina Zone may further contribute to this accumulation" Whale La Brea tar pit

Iirc one of the Culture books has a provocative description of some situation where the human notionally "in charge", at least as far as they can tell, is actually by far the dumbest "thing" in the room, including the room itself.

And now it seems like people mostly fall into: A. People who straightforwardly believe in souls etc B. People who think they don't believe in that stuff, but never got their "bug moment"

I remember staring at those bugs, and at other things (the cat), and trying and failing to "go inside" them. It's really hard to imagine yourself a different shape, with different senses and everything and really feel it; and the illusion is never convincing. But they're "obviously" "thinking".

... And if bugs and if me, why not other things? And I think once you've digested "other kinds of minds shaped by their physical form", "hard" physicalism is a pretty natural step as you learn bigger words.

I credit my Dad's adept handling of "do they [wooly bears] like it in there [bug box]?" with sparing me that. He said something about how they "something it", but probably don't "like" "like us" that crystallized for me the idea that bugs can think, but not necessarily in a way accessible to me

I don't agree with the top level post though. There are plenty of places where it's appropriate to head off harm by punishing the behaviour that causes it. Speeding/DUI, workplace safety, etc. This one is just especially emotionally charged for most people, which makes for bad policy.

I won't go to the mat on this, but weakly believe that CAS/CPS/etc people in particular should be ignored wrt general parenting & child welfare. Exposure to all that seems to make it impossible to maintain anything like ordinary standards of behaviour toward/about/around kids; cursed-knowledgely.

Substack manages to feel un-place-like in a way that I haven't really got a handle on, which I guess discourages people from going there unless funneled in. (as compared to Bsky, Twitter, Discords, Forums, Blogs, ...) Some kind of "achievement" of UX.
