Every year we make the case for keeping leaves, branches, & plant stems in your yard. Bugs need them for shelter! That’s not to say you can’t tidy up: rake leaves into garden beds, around trees, or just in a pile out of the way. All we ask is that you #LeaveTheLeaves! 🍂🐝 xerces.org/blog/leave-t...

Leave the Leaves!
One of the most valuable ways to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the shelter they need to survive the winter. Thankfully, all you need to do is do less yard work.

The elephant mosquito (Toxorhynchites rutilus) is one of the largest mosquitoes in North America with a wingspan of 12mm! They also do not bite, as females do not use blood for their eggs. They're also predators of disease-causing mosquitoes like those in the genus Aedes. So, friends! #invertefest

Carpenter bees love many different types of flowers, just like us! They are generalist pollinators for many plant species including several common agricultural crops. Our mighty mascot can be found pollinating a species of milkweed, an important Michigan native and our floral friend for this year.

We’re celebrating milkweeds for all they do to support not just monarchs and bees, but SO many flora friends. iNaturalist reports almost 100 species of insects visiting swamp milkweed near us! Some even build their homes inside the stems. Join us at Beepalooza’s Bioblitz to see more!
