Birds have always been one of my greatest muses — their flight, their freedom, their individuality, their connection to the past, inspire so much of my poetry. when I write, I try to listen the way they do: with open skies inside my soul.

As a freelancer, the most annoying part of my job is having to remind people to pay me.

“It’s important to note that while the factory may not be on our federal trust property, we still have land and territory that may be affected [by it] and especially citizens,” said Warren Queton, District 7 representative for the Kiowa Tribe.

The nickel refinery sits near culturally significant sites like the Wichita Mountains and the historic Deyo Mission Road Baptist Church in an already industry inundated area. Good Year Rubber and Tire is there, as well as Republic Paper and a plastics factory.

It’s been a year of navigating the complexities of this story, losing my job as a full time radio reporter and battling imposter syndrome. But I stayed committed to telling stories that matter. 🧵

This story took me to Southwest Oklahoma, where I connected with Indigenous leaders of Honor the Earth and Westwin Resistance, attended KCA and city council meetings, and waited alongside Comanche elders for answers from there leaders on why this development was happening. 🧵

Earlier this year, I reported on X that Westwin Elements completed their nickel refinery without getting full consent of the Tribal nations in the area. I now have a story out with @theBWSTimes that reveals community concerns for greenwashing and lack of Tribal consultation.

The first picture perhaps one of the last love poems she wrote to the world right before she died. Titled Fall in Love, it was commissioned by a friend in Omaha NE and printed by linoleum cut. Signed by Nikki herself.

Nikki Giovanni’s poetry and life were a gift of inspiration I’ll forever hold on to. I’m not sad as much as I am grateful for her mentorship and words. She taught me that poetry is how you can come to learn the most about yourself. Say hi to aunt Val for me in heaven Nikki ✨🥹
