Thanks @teamdiptera.bsky.social for busting me into the entomology archives... beefly from 1965

This shrimp in particular (my only orange & white shrimp) loooooves to lay down in the weirdest, deadest position possible and scare me until I poke it with a net and it just casually swims away

Scuds maybe please do not put cherry shrimp in this thing

Isopod Fan Account @bedupolker.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Yeah i actually do have a couple cherry shrimp for Aesthetic (tm) reasons in the tiny 3 gal and they're all still alive just because its crammed with tons of rocks and fast growing plants so I guess with the right setup its fine

Yeah! If youre in a city or an outdoorsy town check out used gear shops, sometimes they'll carry stuff that shouldn't be used for climbing anymore but is still 100% effective for keys or any other use that doesn't involve saving the life of an average sized adult falling 10 feet

Not a lesbian but climber & dabbled in high angle rescue, they're pricy but can't go wrong with black diamond nonlocking beaner, or anything for quickdraws. Downside (other than price) if you ever get into climbing, everyone uses the same one, I've almost accidentally stolen people's keys at the gym

TRUE. Though I had couple juvenile virile crayfish similar size just to look at something while the tank was cycling (RIP they survived the cycle but were sacrificed to become rodent chow) they both would literally just mind their own buisness. I think if Kathy met them she would've taken them both.

In honor of her living on my computer desk, and knowing a lot of people from Maine with this name, I call her Kathy from HR... I don't actually know if it's female but Kevin from HR just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Here she's throwing hands with a ramshorn snail (dont think the snail noticed/cared). She doesn't seem to perceive anything smaller than a bladder snail, hasn't touched any scuds. However she will charge me whenever I walk up to my computer, has tried to fight my hand, my net, and a turkey baster

Got a Mexican dwarf crayfish based on info saying they were peaceful and safe w/ shrimp. But I must have gotten the Hannibal Lector of dwarf crayfish because this one killed two in under an hour. I don't even know how how two shrimp fit inside that tiny body. She's been imprisoned in the scud tank.

Unrelated but my brother got me this realistic mini soup bowl from Taiwan and its making me realize how much the vase looks like soup

Instead of torturing a beta fish in your tiny plant vase, consider: ostracods. They're physically indistinguishable from a sesame seed in size and appearance but they have a lot of personality i swear.

Tried to duplicate that enrichment for rodents where they "bob" for peas in shallow water but they decided to fill the bowl with dirt, dig the peas out, decide they dont like peas, and ate some of the dirt instead

the best mixed drinks I've had this year were pickle themed in some way. Shoutout to the Pickle Margarita of Terlingua Texas and the Pickle Martini of Southwest Harbor Maine, which I liked more than their non-pickle counterparts.

Mariella looks slightly concerned, she has one speech bubble and one thought bubble communicating contradictory messages.

Dialogue: That's too bad.

Thought bubble: Thank goodness!

Trophy hunter
A three panel comic of two anthropomorphic mice eating dinner in a hunting lodge-like setting. The first panel shows the two at eye level, with several mounted heads of bugs and small lizards decorating the walls.

Mariella (mouse 1): I get grasshopper mice are carnivores and all, but..."

The second panel shows Mariella looking up at a mounted stag beetle, which dominates the foreground.

Mariella: The decor's a little... morbid.

The third panel is back at eye level with the mice.

Grasshopper mouse: ... You eat meat, yes?

Mariella: Eating them's one thing... but having their lifeless eyes watch you tear into their husk of a body... Seems... Sacrilegious. Is that the right word?A five panel comic, with two small panels at the top, a large middle panel, and two at the bottom. The small panels are all headshots of the grasshopper mouse.

Grasshopper mouse: ... No. Were I bested by a worthy foe...

Middle panel features an imagined scene of the grasshopper mouse facing a terrifying huge rattlesnake, she appears to have been bested and is struggling to sit up on the ground clutching a wound, facing defeat bravely.

Text: I would consider it a great honor, to be immortalized as a shrine to the passion of our battle.

Bottom two panels, headshots as the grasshopper mouse looks forlorn.

Grasshopper mouse: Of course, this could never happen in reality. Snakes, birds of prey... Have no hands. They can't make trophies.

They are so cute and fun to watch whyyyy can't they stay tiny and nonaggressive forever (virile crayfish, sadly super invasive in my state and can grow up to 5 inches. Once I it grows bigger it will either need to go in a separate gigantic tank or sadly have to be culled)

No clue what these are but I love them. They look like an isopod and a bristleworm had a baby, but my best offhand guess is some kind of scale insect? Always find something new!

#invertefest pretty good day of aquatic inverting... goal #1 was to kidnap some freshwater amphipods for my aquarium so anything beyond that was a bonus

Ostracods! Probably cypridids, a large freshwater group. Got lucky, they were by a storm drainage in a rare clean spot of water thanks to reeds. Just downstream was a duck poop filled pond that probably had zero oxygen and didn't look like it had signs of life. Except ducks and giardia I guess.
