Having been half-and-half on his two previous efforts, Ted Geoghegan’s third film as director is definitely his best work yet. This was a riveting, tense, and very well-crafted historical supernatural horror/drama that kept me engrossed from start to finish. The cast were great. 4/5 #31DaysOfHorror

While this horror/noir from director Lewis Allen isn’t on the same level as his most famous horror work THE UNINVITED (1944), it’s still a really compelling, atmospheric and well-crafted one nonetheless. The performances were really good and the mystery intrigued me throughout. 3.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

It doesn’t do anything we haven’t seen before in the zombie genre and it does stretch credibility at times, but I still found it to be an effectively intense horror film regardless. The script could have used more work, but both the strong acting and filmmaking elevate it for me. 3/5 #31DaysOfHorror

I was very much looking forward to watching director Brett Leonard’s debut since it was a zombie film. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it at all. While it looks great visually and the 3rd act has some fun moments, it’s let down by its poor acting, sluggish pacing and messy script. 1.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

After delivering their best entry in a long time with last year’s V/H/S/HALLOWEEN, this latest one shows that the franchise is running out of steam. While RZA and Ernest Dickerson’s segments are the standouts, the rest were very weak. Plus, the GWAR segments were plainly unfunny. 2/5 #31DaysOfHorror

While this dark horror/comedy has a lot of strong elements to it, like the performances of its two leads, its solid direction, and some fun craziness in its last half, the satire it explores here felt very obvious and half-baked in its execution. Watchable, but forgettable. 2.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

Even though it’s definitely more of a crime noir with a tinge of horror than a straight-up one, I still found it terrific on its own regardless. It’s a compelling, thrilling, heartbreaking, and well-crafted film that’s also elevated by Peter Lorre’s truly magnetic performance. 4/5 #31DaysOfHorror

Oh, man. This teen horror film was pretty bad. However, I must admit that I had fun with how unintentionally funny it can be at times. The plot is a good one, but Corin Hardy’s overwrought direction makes the end result feel very over-the-top and silly. The gore was cool, though. 2/5 #31DaysOfHorror

Given the premise that this TV horror film has, I was expecting director Tobe Hooper to go all out in the insanity department. While it does do that on occasion, it doesn’t quite capitalise on the potential that it could have had. Plus, it can be a bit dull and disjointed too. 2.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

Jayro Bustamante’s follow-up to his terrific previous film LA LLORONA definitely wasn’t the film I was expecting when I started watching it, but that’s what made it a unique experience. It’s a captivating, powerful and heartbreaking fantasy horror/drama with a sublime young cast. 4/5 #31DaysOfHorror

While I can definitely see some people being disappointed that it’s not a full-blown horror film, I still found this a compelling and exquisitely made film nonetheless. A mix of coming-of-age drama, horror, psychological, supernatural and giallo elements made it a riveting watch. 4/5 #31DaysOfHorror

While this adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story definitely had a lot of potential due to it being a continuation of DRACULA, sadly the end result was a rather mediocre affair. Even though the cast were fine, the story itself was very predictable and half-baked in its approach. 2/5 #31DaysOfHorror

Even though it’s pretty standard as far as DRACULA adaptations go, in terms of director Jess Franco’s other work, which I haven’t been a fan of, this is definitely the best film of his I’ve seen so far. It’s a bit slow at times, but Christopher Lee and the cast make it watchable. 3/5 #31DaysOfHorror

Move over, ANACONDA, there’s a new and better giant killer snake movie in town. While its tone might be too serious for some, it worked for me. This was a thrilling, intense, and engaging film that subverts expectations on occasion. The cast were solid and the snake was scary. 4/5 #31DaysOfHorror

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one, but it ended up being a very pleasant surprise. This was a riveting, creepy, beautifully shot, and atmospheric folk horror film that knows how to build dread quite well. Odessa Young and the supporting cast all gave really strong turns. 4/5 #31DaysOfHorror

I must admit it took me a bit to get into this Finnish folk horror film, but once I did, I really dug it. Despite a repetitive structure, it’s a unique vampire tale that’s well-made, visually striking, and coldly atmospheric. Mirjami Kuosmanen’s performance was captivating. 3.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

There’s definitely a lot of potential within the plot of this found footage horror film. Unfortunately, the end result just didn’t work for me. It’s repetitive, predictable, illogical, underdeveloped, boring and unscary. It has some creepy bits, but they’re few and far between. 1.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

While I give this Spanish slasher credit for capturing the tone and feel of late ‘90s post-SCREAM slasher films quite well, sadly it doesn’t elevate itself above being predictable, clichéd, by-the-numbers and dull. Plus, I didn’t find the characters all that engaging or likeable. 2/5 #31DaysOfHorror

You know what? I was expecting a lot of things from this cult ‘80s slasher film, but I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be like this. While its bizarre over-the-top approach won’t be for everyone, I was very much entertained by the absolute craziness happening throughout it. 3.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

Well, this was a surprise. Even though it’s not amazing by any means, this was a really enjoyable, funny, and sweet low-budget romantic horror/comedy that does well with its concept. However, it’s definitely the appealing performances of its two leas that elevated it as well. 3.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

While I prefer the other project they did together THE GHOST BREAKERS a bit more, this first horror/comedy team-up of Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard is still a really fun remake of the 1927 classic. It has witty dialogue, spooky atmosphere and Hope & Goddard’s great chemistry. 3.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

There’s a lot of potential within this found footage horror film. Unfortunately, the end result just didn’t work for me at all, due to it falling into the same traps as other recent ones in this sub-genre. Predictable story, poor use of the format and an unlikable main character. 2/5 #31DaysOfHorror

I’ve been wanting to see this found footage horror film for a while now, since it was a precursor to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Sadly, I found it a mixed bag. While it does have its creepy moments, its filmmaking style strained credibility and the cast didn’t feel believable at all. 2.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

An interesting modern take on Edgar Allan Poe’s story THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. While it reels you in with its atmosphere and oddball vibe, it sadly doesn’t quite come together as a whole in the end. Even at 70 minutes, it felt a bit slow and sluggish. The cast were fine. 2.5/5 #31DaysOfHorror

While this adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe story starts off quite strong, it becomes less engaging in the second half due to some flawed story elements. However, it still has its effective moments and reasolid work from its cast, particularly Vincent Price & Christopher Lee. 3/5 #31DaysOfHorror
