John Garfield, dressed in a gray jacket, white shirt, and a wildly jagged-striped necktie is walking alongside a car. Inside the car is Hume Cronyn who was wearing a fedora and a black coat. He’s looking at John as if he’s saying something.

The Birthday Party was received well in Oxford, but the "comedy of menace" closed after just a week in London. Now it's considered a classic. Playwright, screenwriter, actor and director, also husband to writer Antonia Fraser, #botd in 1930. #writers #drama #filmsky #moviesky
Program for the play The Birthday Party is on the right, showing a man sitting in the darkness with a strange, unearthly light shining on his eyes. Adjacent to the program is the text "Today is the anniversary of Harold Pinter's birth." In smaller text below "But for God's sake, don't throw a party."

Adapted from Edna Ferber's best-selling novel, Giant premiered #otd in 1956. It was James Dean's last film; he died before the film posted, and Nick Adams did his voiceovers. Also starring Rock Hudson and Liz Taylor, the film was socially conscious for its time. #booksky #writers #filmsky #moviesky
Black and white photo--a scene from Giant showing James Dean stretched out in profile in a old convertible, taking up both the front and back seats, his legs are crossed and his feet in boots, rest on the steering wheel. Dean's hat is perched on top of his head, shading the front of his face. A large two-story house far in the background. Otherwise the scene is bare--no grass or shrubbery or sidewalk to the house. It seems to be an island.
