I'm not a lover of paperbacks but as most of the books I read (novels at least) were published decades ago I normally buy a used hardback copy. I'm not interested in buying books as trophies or for display so it doesn't need to be a fancy copy - just one in good condition.

@murielvieux.bsky.social posted a poem by R Arnold which made me think of Matthew Arnold and this poem, which I love.

I know it's not set in Iceland but it made me think of Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow, which I've started 3 times I think but somehow never got to the end of. I must try again.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed a neighbour had put a Christmas wreath on their front door. I've seen a couple of others since but this morning I walked past a house that had a fully decorated Christmas tree in the window. Is it just me or is that far too early?

Only one person I've ever given a book to has told me what they thought about it, and that was only after I'd asked, which is sad. I think that giving a book is a really special thing and always choose them with care so it would be nice to know what the recipients thought, whatever it was.

That was good fortune indeed and I wish that I had met him. With regard to memorials, those from the Georgian period often have the most beautifully expressed sentiments about the deceased person. Jane Austen's is one that springs to mind, and with no reference to her work as an author.

I can never ujnderstand why people can't debate, rather than argue. If I disagree with someone I either put my opposing view respectfully or say nothing. It's not that difficult is it?

I wonder if you've read anything by Julian Litten, who died recently. He sounds as if he were an interesting character. Here is an obituary: www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/ju...

Julian Litten, historian who traced changing death and burial practices and ‘loved a good funeral’
Julian Litten, the historian who has died aged 76, dedicated much of his life to death and its rituals, embracing the idea of style in death with the sort of enthusiasm others devote to lifestyle; he ...

Hello - my first post. I'm another who has become disillusioned with all the unpleasantness of the other place and thought I'd see what it was like here. From what I've seen so far it seems much more friendly and civilised. Let's hope it stays that way.
