This gravestone moved me to posting this image. I'm visiting New England, and wandered a cemetery with graves as far back as 1721. This stone is for Nancy Toney, a slave who died in 1857 at age 82. See ALT for my thoughts.

I couldn't help but note that the names of her original and final owners were listed on the stone; the latter taking credit for it, and explaining why she received one at all. I doubt she is actually interred here among whites, but maybe I'm wrong. Ms. Toney's marker reminds me, as it should us all, that this country and much of its generational wealth was built on the backs of humans owned as chattel, not compensated for their labor, and denied any shred of human dignity. We are at a crossroads not unlike that of the mid-1800s, where we must decide who we wish to be. Do we fight the crimes and injustices we see before us, or do we default to inaction and comfort, allowing them to fester?

Rest in Peace Nancy Toney; I'm sorry I only know your slave name. I hope someday soon this country becomes what its documents say it is, and that your descendants and mine can be proud of it.

This afternoon, Seattle City Council recognized Denny Blaine’s 50+ years of LGBTQ+ history. I helped write the resolution in December, with great input from Friends of Hanlan’s. Mayor Katie Wilson transmitted it in February, and today it passed. Grateful to everyone who made this happen.
