CHAPTER ONE
Although created differently from the common man, Vaelorians were still mortal and what mortals could not understand they hated and what they feared they shunned, and I was both. I didn’t even have the privilege of being born before I was branded a curse. A storm had come and wiped away twelve lives and any possibility of normalcy for me. Five families left Anon that first week and four more in the following month. They would rather risk the wilderness than remain in the same village as me. I know it wasn’t right to complain when so many had lost much more than me, so I didn’t. Not to just anyone at least.

When the ancient people of Earth looked to the stars they saw gods. When Maya looked to the stars all she saw was death. The once Orvanan city was inhabited by nothing more than a few xeno-archeologists now, or more aptly put: battlefield scavengers. Sure the Royals dressed it up in the finery of a scientific discipline filled with insights from a thousand years of tradition and process, but it was as hollow as the bombed-out shells of homes, buildings of learning and inter-species cooperation. In the desecrated and forgotten remains of their fabled civilization, the founders of a hundred star-system alliance, Maya watched her wife take a drink of water from her backpack. She wished there was more to do than think. Thinking made her poetic.

Symbolism is funny because sometimes you can get really esoteric with it and create a really layered representation. Other times it’s just: “The bands were broken but not undone.” And both are totally valid.
