#293. The Murder at the Vicarage - Agatha Christie The explanation at the end for how the killer(s) did their thing was so convoluted that I sort of just gave up on making sense of it. Maybe not a good sign.

Not an insult or anything, it just seems like literally the only people seeing Digger are people with Letterboxd accounts.

People keep making up this fake rivalry between Digger and OBAA like AGI and PTA aren't friends.

Project Hail Mary is a good movie, except for it clearly being written by someone who seems like they live in a blue state but vote red.

It's funny how Top Gun is Tony Scott's most famous movie, and yet it's literally nobody's favorite Tony Scott movie.

It’s October, which means it’s time for pumpkins, skeletons, apple cider, and everyone’s favorite furry Egyptian god. It’s “The Opener of the Way” by Robert Bloch, from the October 1936 issue of Weird Tales! sffremembrance.com/2026/10/04/s...

Short Story Review: “The Opener of the Way” by Robert Bloch
(Cover by J. Allen St. John. Weird Tales, October 1936.) Who Goes There? Robert Bloch is one of those rare prodigies in prose writing, having solder his first story when he was all of 15 or 16. He …

#290. The Mugger - Ed McBain Plays out like an hour-long episode of a TV drama, complete with an A- and B-plot, although this was 1956 and McBain’s 87th Precinct series would prove influential on TV, rather than the other way around.

With all due respect to Donald Sutherland, who's arguably the better actor, Alan Alda is THE Hawkeye. Like the definitive version of that character. Sutherland's Hawkeye feels like an impostor, despite being there first.

Not sure what's worse with the Criterion Channel change, the UI now looking super generic or the subs becoming these ugly blocky poorly formatted things you can't do nothing about.

he's merely cultivated the appearance of having changed for the better. Keep in mind that his whole thing is being a ponderous, tender-hearted, kinda nerdy "male feminist." That is his thing. And you simply cannot reconcile that with what he's done.

making huge assumptions about his character that we actually have no concrete basis for. We don't know if this is the only time he's raped some poor woman, and we don't know if he's actually worked on himself over the past decade or if

Not to add to "the discourse," but it's telling that a lot of online lefties (primarily leftist men, it must be said) are defending Jacob Geller based on taking his words at face value (ya know, the words of a rapist who's trying to defend his public image) and also

#287. Amulet - Roberto Bolaño (trans. Chris Andrews) What is lack in plot it makes up for as one of Bolaño’s most moving pieces. There’s a palpable melancholy relating to Bolaño’s history as a once-young leftist. Think I’ll (re)read The Savage Detectives next.

#286. Alien Metal - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard I can see why this would be one of King Gizz’s more divisive records, but lyrically I can believe it’s from the same guys who made PetroDragonic Apocalypse. I think these guys are worried about climate change idk.

#285. Paris Trout - Pete Dexter The vibes start off bad, and somehow they just get worse. Paris Trout himself is surely one of the most evil and demented characters in literature, scarier and yet more enigmatic than Stephen King’s biggest monsters.

#283. Grateful Dead (Skull and Roses) - Grateful Dead Some pretty good covers here, especially the seamless one-two punch of the final track, but my favorite track has to be the 8-minute death march that is "Wharf Rat." Might be the Dead at their darkest.

Final episode of #ChainsmokerCat (hopefully we get a season 2 announcement soon) was basically everything I could've wanted out this weird, gross, but also sincere anime. It's zany as fuck, but its heart (surprisingly) is pure. I'm gonna miss these girls a lot.

Underrated aspect of MASH that sets it apart from other sitcoms, even those made decades later, is how cinematic it all feels, especially without the laugh track. The direction, the sets, the lighting, it's more like TV movies of the era than its fellow sitcoms.

Exorcist II is a bad movie, in almost every way, but it's also helmed by one of the most interesting and out-there filmmakers of his era and it shows.

A lot of women, even if they’re not straight, are insecure about the idea of their man having voluntarily taken it up the ass, or sucked another man’s dick. It’s why a lot of bisexual men lie about their orientation or act coy about it.

#277. Workingman's Dead - Grateful Dead One of those albums we had on CD since forever because of my dad, but I don't remember if I'd heard this in full before. I will say, I had a brain blast of nostalgia when "Casey Jones" came on. Damn good country-rock record.

#276. End Zone - Don DeLillo A common criticism of DeLillo’s writing is that his characters don’t talk like real people, but rather like what you might call denizens of DeLilloland. In the case of End Zone this oddness is sort of contextualized, but I won’t say how.

#274. Dead Ringers (rewatch) People like to bring up The Fly as the prime example of Cronenberg getting all "emotional," but there's something almost existentially heartbreaking about this movie.

#273. The Naked and the Dead - Norman Mailer (reread) Considered by critics to be one of the great war novels, this is also one of the great novels about failure. It's about masculinity being pushed to the limit, to the point where the male ego breaks down. It rules.
