Nice. Yeah evolution is batshit insane and I leaned that the hard way in a genetic simulation I was running where, when faced with a metabolic restriction to encourage behavior, the organism refused and cut its genome ~75% to park and survive vs working for the food reward.

"sub optimal" by what standard? This is the design that has survived evolutionary pressures to bring it to today. I think nature may have a 3.8 billion year compute lead on your calculations and it's solving for more problems than any test you're going to derive.
