They should also offer login by one time code sent to email. Easy to implement. Just as secure as password reset by... email.

German PhDs only end up getting paid 60% of that figure though.

Literally a coalition between authoritarian racist nationalists and authoritarian racist socialists. Maybe they could merge into one party huh

This process leads to an ERC Scientific Council who got tenure in the 1990s and perhaps never faced employment uncertainty. The obvious solution for them is bigger grants for big stars.

I looked into how the ERC Scientific Council is selected. There is an "Identification Committee" who selects candidates based on "academic eminence". The Identification Committee is appointed by the European Commission, in consultation with.. ERC the Scientific Council.

Capital allocation incentives in academia: Two job candidates. First candidate produced x output, financed by x in grants. Second candidate also produced x output, financed by 2*x in grants. The second candidate is hired due to them having been extra wasteful with public money. #academicsky

All research done on the effectiveness of funding also supports the idea of funding more people with smaller grants. It's also what the majority of scientists want. The ERC Scientific Council unfortunately operates in a political-prestige bubble and is not elected by the scientific body.

I am a native speaker of the English spoken in Ireland. When I was an MSc student at a Dutch university, I gave a presentation in English. After my presentation, the Dutch professor told me, in front of everyone, that I needed to work on my English. Definitely a FUBAR moment.

More power to you for writing your own stuff!! 👍 Perhaps it depends on the department and/or uni, because I know for a fact that both VU Amsterdam and Utrecht University pay thousands to grant consultants for applicants working in my field (natural sciences).

I agree that AI-polished slop should be banned. Grant-consultant-polished slop should also be banned though. For too many years rich institutions have benefited from hiring such consultants. For now, AI is leveling the slop playing field.

It's always amazing when a grant call offers 2 million euros per grant and everyone's project happens to need 1.998 million euros. What a coincidence! A lot of budget maxing going on out there...

Modern academia and the chase for prestige and branding excludes certain scientists. Read all about it in our paywalled Nature-branded work.

Also wondering what Dev would think about an FF government saying that knowledge of the English language is a proxy of integration into Irish society.

Yes the current government is extra nasty in general to foreigners. However, specifically in the case of UK citizens post-Brexit, the current government and previous government have been equally harsh on UK citizens who put in their application too late.

However, Migrationsverket has traditionally been the most Byzantine of all the Swedish myndigheten. If Swedes had to interact with it, they wouldn't tolerate it. But they don't have to interact with it.

Yeah, Sweden is generally a low bureaucracy country where the citizen normally doesn't have to apply for stuff. I was automatically registered to vote in EU elections in Sweden in 2009 and was sent a voting slip. They detected my right to vote. Automatically received child benefit without applying.

The best example of this is a Conservative American online publication finding and replacing all occurrences of "gay" with "homosexual", resulting in the headline "Homosexual eases into 100 final at Olympic trials."

Ireland doesn't do streaming and ranks above the Swiss in the PISA rankings. UK also not too bad in the PISA rankings. Perhaps UK system is ok, but just lacks investment.

Believe it or not this is already the case for years for parents caring for sick children. I have had to drag my coughing and snotty two year old to a doctor's waiting room, wait there for an hour with other sick children, just to get a note so that I could stay home from work to look after him.

But we just need to rig one more job opening for Alice and then another one for Bob and then we can think about hiring from outside our white bubble. Alice and Bob are really nice, are you saying they are not nice? You wouldn't want to be the one that stops them getting a job would you?
