Social distance if you're immunocompromised or otherwise at risk of complications from COVID. Or if you just don't want to get sick.

Masks help spread the slow of COVID-19, and every medical study has verified this. Don't fall for misinformation online. It's important to use NIOSH-certified N95 masks or KN-95 masks. Cloth masks won't do much to slow the spread.

😷 Precautions Remember: A downward trend does NOT mean COVID is no longer present. And it's still at least in the 🔴 High territory, so you still want to be cautious.

Whether this means things are on the decline, or it's temporary, I cannot say. We just got the September 14-16 data within the past couple days, so we'll need to ee if this trend downward continues.

Then a change: 🗓️ September 14-16: Chico saw much lower numbers than it had the previous weeks. Still in 🟣 Very High, but barely. Oroville dropped far down into 🔴 High.

🗓️ September 8-9: Chico was still at about the same levels. Oroville saw substantial growth (just one measurement, but it continues the sort of direction of growth we've been seeing).

Here's a timeline this month: 🗓️ September 1-3: We saw continued growth in both Chico and Oroville. Chico had a large spike in the data (which may not mean anything — this happens sometimes)

🟣 Thursday, September 24, 2026 #COVID report for Butte County, CA First report since Sept. 5th. We've had some rises in the numbers since then in both Chico and Oroville, but then recent drops. It's too soon for me to say what this means, but I wanted to report where we're at.

Looks like there's plenty of availability, so it might be a good time to schedule your vaccine, especially if you're at high-risk and have had no complications from vaccinations in the past. I'll keep you updated as we get more data over the coming weeks. — Christian

According to the data I have, using both the old and new methods, it looks like we're reaching or possibly passing the levels of the last Summer surge. As always, we'll know more as more data comes in.

This changes the data I have. Some of the recent 🟣 Very High spikes are now 🔴 High. Some recent 🟡 Moderate levels are now 🔴 High. So some levels went up, some went down. With that said, we're still firmly in 🟣 Very High territory.

My dashboard calculated this using an older CDC method, which compared up to roughly 1 year in the past. The CDC has since updated this to better compare across up to 2 years, which gives us a better idea of what's normal at different times of the year.

I report based on the wastewater data in Butte County. This gives us a way of seeing if there's an increase or decrease in the spread of COVID. It tells us "are people sick with COVID more now than before" at different times.

The last two years, these lasted between 1-2 months, once we got into Very High territory. There's no way to know if we should expect 1-2 months this time, but it's worth planning for that.

If you switch the selector at the bottom to 3 years, you can see how this compares to past surges. Notice that the data shows spikes, drops, and then spikes again. Wastewater is measured at different times from different sources, and what we're seeing is that they're all spiking into Very High.

COVID travels through the air when people cough or breathe out and can float in the air for up to 3 hours, so by limiting your exposure in indoor settings, you can lower your risk of infection. I'll keep reporting as the data comes in. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay informed. — Christian

Chico's surging. I mentioned last week that the pattern was resembling the start of previous surges. It looks like a surge is well on its way now, with multiple samples showing 🟣 Very High levels of concentration in the wastewater.

Fortunately, none of the current strains appear to be any more severe than what we've seen in the past year, though complications from COVID are still a concern for many.

If you're at risk of health complications, and haven't had a booster in a while, it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor about options. Masking up and avoiding crowded indoor gatherings during a surge has also been a proven way to reduce your chances of catching the virus.

😷 Precautions Based on past years, what we're now seeing in the data for Butte County, and what's going on throughout California, we should prepare for a surge.

There's not nearly as much useful information on which strains are present locally as there once was, so it's getting harder to gauge this.

This should cover one of the strains that appears to be going around right now (XFG.1). I haven't been able to find information about whether it'll cover the other strain that's growing (BA 3.2).

Oroville's latest measurement (July 29th) has it on the border of 🟢 Low and 🟡 Moderate. It's expected that we'd start to see an increase there.

If I zoom out and look at the graph, we can see an upward trend for the past month. We saw the same behavior last Summer, preceding a surge into Very High territory. That doesn't mean we will this time, but it's a possibility. We do know it's at much higher levels than it's been all year.
