this is terrible and also she kept out of prison an insurrectionist who summoned a mob to murder the vice president. she helped cause this environment of political violence at least no one was hurt here, unlike jan6, ICE/NG shootings, etc. etc.

welcome to the Blob huh. here's rhodes in 2016 (www.nytimes.com/2016/05/08/m...)
He had also developed a healthy contempt for the American foreign-policy establishment, including editors and reporters at The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker and elsewhere, who at first applauded the Iraq war and then sought to pin all the blame on Bush and his merry band of neocons when it quickly turned sour. If anything, that anger has grown fiercer during Rhodes’s time in the White House. He referred to the American foreign-policy establishment as the Blob. According to Rhodes, the Blob includes Hillary Clinton, Robert Gates and other Iraq-war promoters from both parties who now whine incessantly about the collapse of the American security order in Europe and the Middle East.

(https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/08/magazine/the-aspiring-novelist-who-became-obamas-foreign-policy-guru.html)“He truly gives zero [expletive] about what most people in Washington think,” Favreau says admiringly of Rhodes. “I think he’s always seen his time there as temporary and won’t care if he’s never again invited to a cocktail party, or asked to appear on ‘Morning Joe,’ or inducted into the Council on Foreign Relations hall of fame or whatever the hell they do there.”

www.startribune.com/mn-feds-hara... the complaint includes intense death threats / harassment against an FBI agent's family, which is bad. but the home drive-by harassment sounds identical to ICE/CBP's own intimidation tactics they use against Minneapolis civilians. it's ok when the feds do it?
“After the employees’ personal information and documentation was compromised,” the complaint read, “several of the documents, including residential addresses, phone numbers, and emails, were posted publicly online on social media.”

It would not be long, the complaint continued, before “approximately 10 to 15 FBI agents and employees ... began receiving multiple harassing and threatening phone calls and emails and suspicious drive-bys to their residences, where vehicles would slow down as they passed the employees’ residences before driving away.”

from @jamellebouie.net's newsletter today. makes you wonder about the judge who signed off on said warrant! www.nytimes.com/2026/01/31/o...
Jamelle Bouie, 1/31/26:

The arrest of Don Lemon, a former CNN anchor, and several others (including another independent journalist, Georgia Fort) for their presence at the protest of a Minneapolis church — Cities Church, where a pastor serves as a senior official for Immigration and Customs Enforcement — is another instance of this blunt force approach to the use of power. There is little chance these arrests will lead to a viable prosecution. Justice Department officials struggled to find a judge who would authorize the arrests since protest, and the journalistic coverage of a protest, are among the activities explicitly protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

the logic here blaming challengers is ridiculous. the party shouldn’t spend any time or mone to defend safe seat incumbents. the choice of nominee in those places, by definition, doesnt impact congressional party control!
CNN: And it has infuriated some Democrats — including among the most vulnerable members — who fear the party will have to divert money away from the bigger fight against the GOP to protect incumbents in safe seats.

To underline this point -- a *majority* of extreme conservative younger adults agree with at least one of these (putatively) anti-semitic statements. But that's not true for any other political group. (The entire poll is fascinating. Esp the Qs on def'n of "antisemitism", near the end)

it's worked in minnesota at least en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer%... or arguably other new parties during party system transitions if Nebraska or hopefully a few other states had successful anti-Republican third parties, that would be a win

Next step is to publicly and loudly threaten to prosecute said underling, and call them out by name. It may help deter more lawbreaking. They need willing underlings to do all this. Accountability isn’t just for high-level officials - broad political-legal attack is useful too, starting right now.
the underling who reached out to me is trying to influence the election on my dime,” Walker told The Republic. “That individual works for me. He works for you. He’s on my payroll, he’s on your payroll, and he’s campaigning on company time. That’s a violation of the Hatch Act.

house dems should hold unofficial sessions with straw-poll vote counts on their proposed bills to make this point
But by keeping the House on indefinite hiatus — as well as sidelining its oversight authority and more or less ceding its power to make law to the president — Republicans have successfully circumvented the text of the Constitution to make our national legislature a nullity. They have, for all intents and purposes, dissolved Congress.

oof (from the linked DOJ report) -- he lied that he wanted to call his mother and they let him call whoever he wanted. and it's unknown who he called maybe a bit more consistent with suicide but not super relevant to the question, i guess
The OIG’s investigation and review revealed that on the night before his death, Epstein placed an unrecorded, unmonitored telephone call using a non-Inmate Telephone System line from 6:58 p.m. to
7:19 p.m. Other than an MCC New York call log, no other BOP records exist regarding this unmonitored call, including the identity of the person Epstein called or a summary of the conversation. The OIG’s investigation determined that on August 9, 2019, Epstein asked to call his mother. The Unit Manager told the OIG that after Epstein’s attorney visit had concluded, he agreed to allow Epstein to place a telephone call on an unrecorded legal line. The Unit Manager explained that it was his understanding that Epstein did not have the ability to place a telephone call through the Inmate Telephone System. The OIG’s investigation established both that Epstein’s mother was deceased at the time he asked to telephone her

the prison was run poorly with a history of other incidents endangering inmates and management hiding evidence of staff misconduct. not conclusive evidence for suicide but makes it quite plausible www.npr.org/2023/06/27/1... www.npr.org/2021/08/26/1... though i'm left curious about this call
Epstein was also allowed to use a jail phone the night before he died that was unmonitored, in violation of BOP policy, and was not re-assigned a new cellmate despite previously attempting suicide.
