In this Review, Bikdeli and colleagues summarize the available evidence on the worldwide incidence and outcomes of VTE, specifically deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Their findings reveal a substantial and, in some regions, increasing burden of disease, sources of heterogeneity and striking regional gaps in the data.
