didn't include this one because it's not glowing but to be clear this is also the Thing. big tension in spielberg's work between if you should embrace the thing despite the danger, or avoid it and keep your eyes shut--different films go different ways!

(it's a little trite to say And That Thing Is The Movies, though I definitely think that watching The Greatest Show On Earth as a child is when Spielberg saw the Thing)

I totally understand people who don't like modern architecture, but just from a perspective of understanding, once you've seen the dozens of (truly beautiful!) 19th century churches of france a building like the museum of the confluences hits like a party drug

4. art is actually very important, and museums are actually very worthwhile and you should visit and support them. not to get sappy but I was extremely moved by the etruscan sarcophagus of spouses at the louvre

and with all the beautiful churches of paris, it just reminds me of that other big contradiction in western history, how much gold and marble and craftsmanship went into making beautiful, gaudy depictions of... the brutal suffering of a poor carpenter from nazareth

these contradictions are most notable in the pantheon, theoretically a monument to all great french people, which has a huge statue in honor of the generals of the revolution. and also, a just-as-huge statue in honor of the leaders of the restoration. great people on both sides!

and so paris is constantly inducing awe, but also making clear how learned awe-inducing techniques can be directed towards any cause. la madeleine is so beautiful it makes you want to be catholic; napoleon's tomb is so beautiful it makes you want to serve the emperor

kids at urban playgrounds wear reflective vests, something I've never seen in the US but can imagine (probably does make them safer without restricting freedom!) gendarmes carry way bigger guns than US cops. traffic lights are lower. sodas in vending machines are upside down!
