It’s absolutely criminal that when talking about the Fox X-Men no one ever mentions the killer performance of Brendan Halberstein as my all time favourite X-Man: Forget-Me-Not!

The standard supermarket produce section in Cork is not the same as in Manchester, and those two are culturally pretty similar! Sophia, Rome, and Copenhagen are massively different! I also saw totally different produce sections in San Diego from what I saw in Las Vegas.

Cold take: the quality of food available in places is super variable and what people think of as a measure of quality also varies so much that big generalisations about the US and Europe as a whole are completely pointless.

Rereading @elgoonishshive.bsky.social from the start is such a trip. Seeing the characters go from sexist jokes to deep exploration of their own gender queerness as the author matured is amazing.

I think there’s some value in experience but you can get a lot from related work without actually being a politician. Eg. Carney was a governor of a national central bank for a while, which is definitely related to government.

I also think calling Sir Keir a career politician is inaccurate. He was a career civil servant and then moved into politics. I get the impression that he was motivated heavily by how much he saw politicians not knowing how to actually govern.

Source: I was an active Labour member at the time when a Corbyn was being challenged and I spoke to numerous people who were on the left of the party but pissed off with his handling of Brexit and other things.

James Weaver🇪🇺🇮🇪🏰⛵️🏰 @bazzalisk.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
Eh. There were multiple factors in the removal of Corbyn. There was definitely a group who felt that he was too far left, but it was very notable that even MPs who are fairly left supported removing him on the grounds that he was incompetent and couldn’t organise a cabinet meeting.

I think he’s a guy with a deep and strong belief in stable well offered efficiently run administration, and not much interest in much else. He’s Labour because he hates what the Tories stand for, like many others, but the thing he hates about them is the corruption and nepotism. I think.

Well, not my politics anymore, I moved to Ireland a few years ago :) But I keep track. Sir Keir has been pushing hard to the right and pandering to TERFs since he came to power, but his party has just lost badly in local elections and he’s facing leadership challenges. Change in direction.

This is great news! (Note for people not familiar with the UK constitution: although King Charles gives the speech he doesn’t have any say in its content, this is a change in direction by Keir Starmer’s government)
030
James Weaver🇪🇺🇮🇪🏰⛵️🏰 @bazzalisk.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
In some ways yes, but this isn’t an example: any UK monarch is required to read the speech the government gives them, they have no say in the content.

James Weaver🇪🇺🇮🇪🏰⛵️🏰 @bazzalisk.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
The King’s speech is written by the government, the King just reads it. He’s essentially just a spokesman here. Which isn’t a knock, but credit here should go to the government.

James Weaver🇪🇺🇮🇪🏰⛵️🏰 @bazzalisk.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
Charles is just the government’s spokesperson here. He is required to read whatever they give him. Credit here should go to the UK government.

James Weaver🇪🇺🇮🇪🏰⛵️🏰 @bazzalisk.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
Fair, but he has no actual say in the contents of the King’s Speech. He’s basically just the government’s official spokesman here. The question is why Sir Keir has changed direction here.

There are people I trust who are getting good, even amazing results with gen AI assisted coding, but literally *every* time I see someone trying It it results in bad code and takes far longer than doing it by hand would have. So what am I missing? Why is my experience so different?

Given a function P that maps natural numbers to propositions if you have a proof of P(0) and a proof of ∀ n ∈ N, P(n) ⟹P(n+1) then you have a proof of ∀ n ∈ N, P(n)

The pagan Spring Equinox festival of Ostara is not the antecedent of the Christian Easter, because the pagan Spring Equinox festival of Ostara was created in around 1973. I appreciate that a statement like this warrants some substantiation, so bear with me.

Admittedly it’s not the only double plural in English. “Children” is a weird word when one thinks about it.

James Weaver🇪🇺🇮🇪🏰⛵️🏰 @bazzalisk.bsky.social · 31/12/2025
Yes? That’s why “y’all” makes no sense. You’re pluralising something that’s already plural.

Let them see the rural black communities they spent decades suppressing actually be empowered. Let them see their children educated and happier living in a multicultural world. Let them see their worldview collapse.

In some ways I might argue that the very best way for you to get your revenge would be to rework things to make it easier and more likely for the children and grandchildren of the rural conservatives to become liberal.

James Weaver🇪🇺🇮🇪🏰⛵️🏰 @bazzalisk.bsky.social · 31/12/2025
I think it’s important to target actions appropriately. You don’t want to catch the next generation of kids who would go to college and move to the cities in the area of effect.

Personally I would argue that rural mail delivery has historically acted as a supportive lifeline to the vulnerable people otherwise trapped in rural areas. I could see an argument that the internet has largely replaced this now though
