Aleister Crowley, the self-styled Beast 666, was born 151 years ago today in Leamington Spa, of all places. Dennis Wheatley dined with him and based Mocata in The Devil Rides Out on him. Hammer cast Charles Gray, later of Rocky Horror. Bad taste done properly.

Field Report: I spent ten years as a haunted house monster, so I watched The Houses October Built (2014) so you don't have to. Real haunts, real scare actors, and a found-footage plot shakier than the camera. Rule one for filmmakers: ask before you film the monsters.

Before Terrifier had people fainting in the aisles, Blood Feast (1963) was handing out sick bags at the door. America's first splatter film, shot in colour purely so you'd see the red, and later the oldest film on Britain's video nasty list. It's terrible. Watch it anyway.
Watch This As Well graphic on a blood red background with two film posters: if you loved Terrifier (2016), check out Blood Feast (1963), America's first splatter film, where cinemas handed out sick bags.

Found the receipts. A few of the faces I wore during ten years as a monster at Netherworld in Atlanta, from Inner Sanctum in 2002 to Rule Number One, plus one look that scared nobody. Episode 12 tells the stories behind them. Link in bio.

Everything I learned in a decade of scaring strangers at Netherworld, boiled down to three rules. Scare the grown-ups. Make fans of the kids. And always scare the chair. Episode 12 explains the chair. Link in bio.

For ten years I jumped out of the dark at Netherworld Haunted House in Atlanta and scared strangers for a living, including, one night, Janet Jackson. Episode 12 is the whole story, from Gut Putt to Scare A Bear. Live now.

Zombieland filmed in it, Halloween II rented its monsters, and The Walking Dead shut its zombie school because Netherworld's performers were already that good. I spent ten years in that haunted house. Episode 12 drops tomorrow.

Ten years hiding in the dark making grown adults scream, and somehow I'm the one who got paid. Episode 12 is my decade at Netherworld Haunted House. Out Tuesday.

Netherworld Haunted House is celebrating its 30th season: original monsters since 1997, Zombieland filmed inside, and it lives at 1313 Netherworld Way. I spent ten of those seasons in the dark, 1999 to 2009. More on that next week. fearworld.com

Field Report: I watched Frogs (1972) so you don't have to. The frogs don't kill anybody. Snakes, lizards and an alligator do all the work while the title characters sit there croaking. #Frogs1972 #HorrorPodcast

Finished Night of the Lepus and still want giant rodents? The Food of the Gods (1976) pulls the same trick with rats, real animals on tiny sets, then adds giant wasps, worms and a chicken for good measure. Ida Lupino is in it. Our Lepus episode is live, link in bio.

"He was making a Western with the wrong animal in it." — on the director of Night of the Lepus, who shot giant killer rabbits with zero horror technique and total sincerity. New episode of Baz To The Bone is live now.

New episode is up: Night of the Lepus — giant killer rabbits, Janet Leigh, Star Trek's DeForest Kelley, and a real Australian ecological catastrophe that's stranger than the movie it inspired.

24 rabbits in 1859. 600 million by the 1950s. Real Australian history, not movie fiction — and it's the true disaster behind Night of the Lepus. New episode of Baz To The Bone drops tomorrow.

Episode 11 is coming: Night of the Lepus — Some Bunny's Gonna Regret It. Giant killer rabbits, Janet Leigh, and Star Trek's DeForest Kelley, all in one gloriously miscalculated 1972 movie. Tuesday, September 22nd.

On this day in 1929: Daniel Haller was born. He spent the 60s designing Roger Corman's gothic Poe sets, then Corman handed him a camera — Haller's directing debut was a Lovecraft adaptation starring Boris Karloff.

House of Mystery (1934): a man fakes a Hindu curse, a killer gorilla, and his own paralysis rather than pay back his investors. I watched it so you don't have to.

oved Ready or Not? Watch The Old Dark House (1932) next. Same instinct, 90 years apart — trap a group of outsiders in one house and let them turn on each other.

Jack Pierce built monsters like it was scripture. I built them like it was a fire drill. Episode 10 is live — Boris Karloff, Jack Pierce, and twenty years of doing the same job under very different pressure.

Before Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale made a haunted house movie starring the same magnificently unsettling actor — and one dinner scene in it is the reason horror nerds still say "have a potato" to each other unprompted. Episode 10, Tuesday.

42 years ago today: C.H.U.D. hit US theaters. Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers — that's genuinely the title. Made for barely a million dollars, with a young, completely unknown John Goodman getting maybe ten seconds of screen time. Still a great little B-movie.

Shock Treatment (1981) is what happened when Tim Curry turned down a real Rocky Horror sequel and a 1979 actors' strike killed the planned US shoot. They filmed the whole thing on one soundstage instead. Richard O'Brien hates it now. Jessica Harper is genuinely great in it.

People treat Rocky Horror like it invented the glam-rock horror musical. It didn't — Brian De Palma beat it by a year with Phantom of the Paradise, and made something stranger out of the same ingredients. New episode's up.

Phantom of the Paradise (1974) bombed on release, got resurrected by one obsessive Canadian city, and turns out to be the direct visual ancestor of Daft Punk's robot helmets. Episode 09 is live, including the story of the theater where my own love of cinema actually started. Link in bio.

Daft Punk's robot helmets are lifted straight from a 1974 box-office bomb called Phantom of the Paradise — the teenage Bangalter and de Homem-Christo watched it 20+ times in Paris. Decades later they got the film's star, Paul Williams, to co-write "Touch" for Random Access Memories.

Universal almost sued Piranha (1978) out of existence for daring to exist the same summer as Jaws 2. Spielberg watched it and called it the best Jaws rip-off ever made. Corman won. 48 years today. @baztothebonepod

I watched it so you don't have to: I Eat Your Skin (1971). Del Tenney shot this the same year as The Horror of Party Beach — then it sat on a shelf for eight years before a distributor gave it a new title and shoved it out as half of a double bill with a film titled I Drink Your Blood.

Gutzon Borglum's old sculpting studio — yes, the Mount Rushmore guy — later became the workshop that built the monster suits for The Horror of Party Beach. Presidents to rubber gill-men. That's the whole industry in one building.

Episode 07 drops July 28: Horror of Party Beach (1964). A film made to fill a hole in a drive-in schedule, starring a real rock band on their last summer together and a monster suit built in the studio that carved Mount Rushmore. I love it completely, without irony.

Train to Busan turns 10 today. The wildest part of its history isn't the zombies — it's that director Yeon Sang-ho had already told this exact story that same year, as a much bleaker animated film called Seoul Station. Nobody noticed until he did it again with a train.

New episode: The Exorcist. A paperback that found me at ten, a CBS broadcast that found me at fifteen, and a film that taught me more about my own body than anyone in my life did. Possession as a metaphor for adolescent queerness — nobody told me that in 1974. Out now.

Trivia: who actually voices the demon inside Regan in The Exorcist? Not Linda Blair. Mercedes McCambridge — Oscar winner, 57, ate raw eggs and chain-smoked to wreck her voice, then had herself tied to a chair to record it. Wasn't even credited at first. EP06 drops tomorrow.
