One big tip I'll give about reference is you have to make your piece look consistent. I've seen so many people just trace models in CSP or Photoshop and you can absolutely see the bones of that reference. You can't stop at tracing it, you have to actually think about how to match it to your style.

The trick with that, too, is that photos distort proportions for a wide variety of reasons, so practicing with and without reference lets you know how to correct those inconsistencies. Looking how guys like Rockwell would adhere to and deviate from their reference is wonderful.

Like, reference is a pretty big umbrella. You don't need to be referencing every composition and shot, but an arm here, an object there, it's all reference and it'll make everything in your work that much more solid.

Some of the most iconic shots in film are results of technology failing or just not existing. In Alien, when they first land on the planet, that degraded monitor footage of them exploring the planet is just because their planet model's surface looked bad on film, so Scott grabbed an old monitor

I've got the commentary for Alien on while I'm drawing, and it strikes me there's an interesting conversation in regards to AI. Our style and creative expression is often the result of what our limitations are. Be it how we perceive the world, time, materials, our understanding of something, etc.
