I have it. I'm reading it. @sarahfritz.bsky.social , you have done something very difficult -- aside from all the research. You have made an academically astute book into something readable and exciting. Beyond what it's done for Clara Schumann, it's a lesson to nonfiction writers everywhere.

No Professor T (Belgian version) means this list is dead to me. (Or Blacklist, for that matter, or Good Fight just for the essential intro.) Never mind. It's the NYT.

Thanks so much for asking! The image here is a sheet about its exploration of new notation, nonpop, colonial notation, the challenges of a rural composer, etc. (If it's too small, the ALT text is provided.) Thanks again for asking!
Soiled Amplitudes: My Musical Composition and Notational Aesthetic in Five Seasons is an exploration of present-day musical composition, traditional and graphical music notation, and life as a rural composer.
It follows composer Dennis BathoryKitsz in a search for both compositional truth and the integrity of music created as graphical scores. Revealing music as a mix of so-called “colonial notation” and a panoply of new symbols, graphics, drawings, and colorful patterns, he carries the reader through the historical twists and turns of music written on paper. Bathory-Kitsz explains what he means by nonpop, why music isn’t language as we know it, how performance art and installations are part of the compositional realm, and why the world of musicians is filled with modern-day Mozarts waiting to be heard. Living in Vermont, he also lays out the life and challenges of a rural composer in an urban society.

“It is absolutely unique and will change the way you think about music-making in our society.”
—composer Stephen Michael Gryc, Connecticut
“Your book is an absolutely deep read. I can imagine a whole seminar to get through it with questions, examples, and projects. This is something that is going to last a long time.”
—composer Paul Beaudoin, Tallinn, Estonia
“Aside from being a splendid read, this book is also wonderful to browse. Get captivated for three or four pages, then stop, ponder, and emerge much wiser.”
—composer/author Chris DeLaurenti, Seattle
“For classical musicians who may be definitely rooted in traditional notation ... Soiled Amplitudes is a great way to start to break down barriers to modern notation.”
—composer/conductor David H. Bailey, New Hampshire
“What wonderful insights Dennis shares into the life of a rural composer, and how immersion into one’s environment largely conditions what one can do, or even conceive of doing, in the creative arts. Challenging observations and reflections!
—composer/performer Yahya Abdal-Aziz, Victoria, Australia

After the original selling-like-hotcakes period, I have a bunch of "Soiled Amplitudes" books here. About a dozen of my social media friends asked for copies but haven't followed up (please!). Dozens of full-color illustrations and scores from people you know. Autographed. Message me.

I've used NonPop for 25 years. Avoids the whole 'classical' baggage and is way more inclusive.

As I understood it some time ago, one could use his work in a musical setting as long as it was untouched -- in other words, all the words in original order and nothing repeated that he didn't repeat -- and not printed separately from the score. I haven't dug into this again, but probably should.

This was hovering over our house a few years ago -- with TEN spinning circular saw blades. We're a few hundred feet from the rail line, and it turns out they were trimming branches. A few minutes of horror-movie thoughts.

I came up via Cakewalk & CoolEdit in the early 90s. Gradually CoolEdit changed names and added features; then Adobe went subscription. Cakewalk vanished as SONAR (with many big projects in their proprietary format). So I switched to Reaper some 15 years ago and have been happy about that.
