They did it!
Good to hear that five friends have completed a 31.5-mile charity walk through Bath and the surrounding countryside, spending 15 hours on foot and raising more than £3,000 for Family First Ghana. Rosie Watts, Harriet Moatt, Liberty Hamer, Sarah Withams and Buse Yediayli set off from Bath Abbey at 6am on Saturday, 26 September, before making their way through Batheaston, Colerne, Slaughterford, Box, Bradford on Avon and Monkton Combe, eventually returning to Bath later that evening. Originally planned as a 30-mile route, the challenge lived up to its name as the group went the extra mile, completing a total distance of 31.5 miles.

Getting down to business
The Bath Business Conference returns for its fifth year on 13th October at the Apex City of Bath Hotel. Now firmly established as a highlight of the city’s business calendar, the annual event brings together professionals, entrepreneurs, and organisations from across Bath and beyond for a day of connection, challenge and collaboration. This year’s programme doesn’t shy away from the big questions facing business today. Delegates have the chance to meet Bath’s business community while diving into some of the most-talked-about topics shaping the city’s future. The day kicks off with a Quickfire Speed Networking session led by Luca Volentir, Founder of The Briefing Room and Les Redwood, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Mogers Drewett, getting delegates connecting from the moment they walk through the door.

The art of war
As exhibitions at the Victoria Art Gallery go, this is a first! Never before has the art venue hosted an exhibition of Ukrainian icons, the work of husband-and-wife iconographers, Sofia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko. It opens tomorrow, Thursday, October 1st. The couple live in war torn Kviv and instead of the usual wooden panels, they have chosen to use panels from ammunition boxes from the war zones in Ukraine. As Marian McNeir MBE, ambassador for the partner city charity, the Friends of Oleksandriya, says: " The icons are intensely moving and serve as silent witnesses and symbols of victory over life and death.

Julianne Mackrell writes: 'The newly formed Bathford History group on Facebook has proved popular since the demise of the Bathford History Society in the summer. The hope is that there is interest in recording all of the valuable research which is held by a local resident currently. The Village Club (former Legion) will be the venue for our long-awaited meet-up! The group has already reunited old neighbours who are keen to share memories. Everyone is welcome to attend; there is no charge, but please buy a drink to support the venue for hosting us.

Early one morning
It's quicker for us to drive to Sainsbury's at Chippenham rather than cross Bath to the GreenPark store. An early Saturday morning trip recently gave us a lovely taste of autumn as it trickles into our surroundings. How about this for a valley mist? We stopped to record the scene on top of a hill leading from Box to Corsham.

A big thank you to the people who worked so hard clearing this pathway. It's made a blind corner much safer, visibility-wise. This route - away from the London Road - is shared by us cyclists, buggy pushers, dog walkers, joggers, schoolgoers, commuters on foot and just people out for a stroll. The pathway leads across the River Avon and under the London railway line up to the towpath on the Kennet and Avon Canal. I shouted well done while they were still cutting back the weeds, and l think someone shouted back, 'volunteers for the ramblers.' Is that the Rambler's Association? If you have any more information, then do let me know.

This is a bit of a last-minute notice, but it's good to welcome a singing group from America to Bath. It's one offering the chance to join in too! Jeremy Carter-Gordon emailed me to say: " I sing with the internationally touring vocal ensemble Windborne. We’re in Bath tomorrow, Saturday, September 26, for a singing workshop and short concert at St Swithin’s Church. I wondered whether this might be of interest to Bath Newseum or something you’d be willing to share today. I’ve included the event information below that you can use verbatim if that’s easiest.

Celebrating local heroes
It's time to say 'thank you' as nominations open for the Bath and North East Somerset Community Awards. Do you know someone or some support animal who you think has gone above and beyond to support their community? Nominations have opened for the annual awards, which celebrate volunteers, charities, and organisations that make a real difference to people's lives. Now in their 17th year, the awards recognise community champions who promote equality, inspire others to get involved, and provide outstanding support to residents. This year there are exciting new categories for Support Animal of the Year working for an organisation, and a special lifetime achievement award for those who have left a lasting legacy in their community.

Roadworks city
If you're a regular user of city roads, you can't have failed to notice that there's a fair bit of disruption at present with roadworks dotted around central Bath. One of the main obstructions is currently Manvers Street, where last-century concrete slabs over the many vaults and cellars beneath the road's surface are being replaced. The danger, with modern and much heavier traffic, is that one of those underground structures could collapse and cause both injury and considerable damage. It's where I caught up with Cllr Lucy Hodge, who is B&NES Cabinet member for Sustainable Transport Delivery.

Construction begins next week on a new £12m Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, which will provide improved facilities and a better environment and experience for patients with non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Once completed, the new purpose-built centre will replace the RUH’s current UTC, which at the moment is based within its Emergency Department. Moving the centre out of the Emergency Department to a new location on the RUH site will improve capacity in ED for patients and staff, reducing crowding and supporting safer care.

Roman Bath just got bigger!
Well l never. Excavations beneath the National Trust’s Bath Assembly Rooms have uncovered a network of Roman ditches along with pottery, coins, glassware and a fragment of a military helmet, revealing substantial activity in an area previously unexplored for Roman settlement. Experts say the finds expand the known extent of Roman occupation and suggest that further remains are likely to survive beneath neighbouring Georgian streets and properties that have never been investigated archaeologically. Bath’s Roman Baths and temple complex are among Britain’s best‑known archaeological sites, and Roman activity has long been recorded beyond the second‑century walls of…
