Yeah so I'm not gonna fuck over people who need alt text because "it trains AI". AI is being trained on EVERYTHING. It's not gonna stop it from harvesting or emulating your work. But not writing alt text IS going to make your space less accessible. Don't let the panic turn you into an asshole.

If it's helpful, this is the quick and easy guide I use for writing alt text in a way that's "good enough" without being too mentally demanding. Sometimes I include more or less info depending on energy level, but this gives a decent base to follow

A guide to writing alt text. The title at the top reads "writing alt text." Underneath, in colorful bubbles, it lists "identify who," "expression," "description," "color," and "interesting features." Included is a photo of a capybara with the sample alt text "A capybara looking relaxed in a hot spa. Yellow yuzu fruits are floating in the water, and one is balanced on top of the capybara's head." Portions of the sample alt text are color-coordinated to show which of the instructional bubbles it corresponds to.

I used to hate static on dark pictures during my film school days. I felt they inaccurately capture reality as we see it. But now, I find it beautiful. Some digital cameras render the images without, but I have turned this off for my camera. The flaws of tech feel warm with time, as we look back.
