The old rhetoric about “single-sex spaces” and “protecting children” is useless here, since this is about adults being denied their bodily autonomy despite it affecting no-one else.

but it doesn’t matter, because they don’t need those pretences anymore to get what they want. They have all the institutional power and we have none.

They’re on the offense, in the driver’s seat, mask-off and with the upper-hand. We can't afford to keep fighting within the rules of the system.

while we admire the gains made by trans supporters working within the healthcare system
to change it, we can all see how easily the attitudes of those in power change when abandoning trans people is convenient.

Simply appealing to the better nature of those at the top still leaves the power in their hands to betray us later.

We will only gain concessions through DIRECT ACTION. we must have our own organisations, our own healthcare systems, and strong mutual aid networks. the powers-that-be will not concede an inch until we are a coherent threat from below. We cannot afford to waste even a second when our survival is on the line.

What they are angry at here plainly is that this service aims to provide healthcare to trans people at all and in a way that is on our own terms.

The only way the welsh gender service is going ‘rogue’ (as The Times claims) is that they are actually trying to provide care to trans patients. this stands in sharp contrast to the labour government’s plan for the nhs, backed by senior nhs bosses and almost every media outlet.

They want the nhs to be nothing more than a machine that forces trans people into detransition and conversion therapy (see our ‘What a Shit Pride Month’ post or Philosophy Tube’s video about conversion therapy in the UK).

Like with the puberty blocker ban and the Brighton WellBN clinic stitch-up, the supposed need to paternalistically "protect" trans people against a nebulous “potential harm" is used as justification for doing real, measurable harm to us.

The increasing ridiculousness and vagueness of transphobes’ justifications for taking away our care are deliberate.

The NHS Wales Commissioning Committee has forced the Welsh Gender Service to suspend all gender-affirming surgeries.

This nakedly cruel policy shift will wreak havoc on the lives of Welsh trans people. it will force patients into months of limbo that massively disrupt their lives, while NHS higher-ups take their sweet time to cook up yet another sham "investigation".

at worst, patients will be driven into worse mental health and suicidality. despite government cover-ups, we all know the true statistics about our community.

The Welsh gender care system, while not perfect, is one of the best in the uk, and delivered for trans people by collaborating with the community and with GP surgeries, proving that positive change is possible.

This massive u-turn comes under pressure from the Welsh Tories, whipped into a frenzy by a terf blogger and Murdoch rag ‘The Times’, which claimed that wales having higher surgery referral rates than England somehow proves that harm is done.

that’s all it took to obliterate healthcare for hundreds of trans people.

Amnesty UK have apologised to JK Rowling for rightfully calling out her anti-rights rhetoric. Shame on them. A human rights organisation should not cave to pressure from billionaires, especially those who wish to make supporting human rights a terrorist offence. xoxo BASH BACK

Bash Back was in attendance: “Stand-up, fight back!” as was the usual omni-cause, with some claiming the trans “genocide” to be comparable to what is happening in Gaza. Sex workers’ rights activists were there too. Chants and slogans proclaimed “trans joy”, and there was a near-constant refrain of “HRT, HRT, over the counter and for free!”

In a statement posted on social media, Bash Back said: “We completely reject the idea that we are a ‘terrorist’ group. We are a non-violent direct action group that demands the total liberation of trans people, and opposes the rising tide of anti-trans bigotry.”

The group said its action guide stated: “We do not condone causing physical harm to any human being”, and added: “We take action to defend ourselves and our community from violence.”

It described Walney’s intervention as “cruel double standards” because it came a day after what it called a right-wing terrorist attack on Berlin Pride. German authorities have said the suspect was an Islamist.

Bash Back said: “Proscription is a tool of control wielded by the ruling class against those who challenge their power.”

Who is Lord Walney? Find out here:

Lord Walney – aka John Woodcock – is a right-wing authoritarian who despises all forms of dissent. From 2020 to 2025, he was an advisor to the state on “political violence”.
In this role he called for Palestine Action to be proscribed, which the Labour government enacted in 2025.

Woodcock was a Labour MP, but he was suspended in 2018 after being accused of sexual harassment. While the investigation into this was ongoing, he resigned from Labour, ending the investigation. He was then given a peerage and a new job by the Conservatives.

Woodcock was sacked in 2025 after Labour abolished his role, but he continues to throw his weight around in the house of lords.
