Na lang nadenken heb ik vandaag besloten om af te treden als Europarlementariër voor PRO en als co-voorzitter van de Europese Groene groep.

$Na lang nadenken heb ik vandaag besloten om af te treden als Europarlementariër voor PRO en als co-voorzitter van de Europese Groene groep. Ik heb veel nagedacht of ik na de midterms nog door wil en ben tot de conclusie gekomen dat ik daar de energie niet meer voor heb. Zeventien jaar lang heb ik mij als groene Europarlementariër met hart en ziel ingezet voor groene idealen, voor de partij en voor onze fractie. Van en verbod op F-gassen tot CO2 standaarden voor vrachtwagens: ik ben trots op wat we de afgelopen jaren samen hebben bereikt. Ik weet zeker dat ik samen met mijn collega’s van PRO en de Groenen iets heb neergezet waarop verder op voortgebouwd kan worden. Maar we zijn in een nieuwe fase beland. Met de oprichting van PRO in het vooruitzicht breekt een nieuw tijdperk aan. Die partij verdient volksvertegenwoordigers die daar met volle energie voor gaan. Tijdens het Europa Festival van PRO op 9 mei zag ik hoeveel energie, optimisme en strijdlust er in de partij leeft. Ik zag een beweging die vooruit kijkt en barst van ambitie voor de toekomst. Tegelijkertijd merkte ik bij mezelf dat ik die energie, na zeventien jaar, niet op dezelfde manier kan opbrengen. Daarnaast heb ik de afgelopen periode kritisch gereflecteerd op mijn eigen handelen. Ik heb in het verleden niet altijd het juiste gedaan. Ik heb relaties gehad die niet passen bij mijn rol. Dat had ik niet mogen doen en daar neem ik mijn verantwoordelijkheid voor. Die reflectie, samen met het besef dat de partij een nieuwe fase ingaat, heeft mij tot dit besluit gebracht. Voor mij is het tijd om ruimte te maken. PRO verdient een nieuwe generatie politici die met genoeg energie verder bouwt aan het succes van de partij. Die toekomst wil ik met vertrouwen aan hen doorgeven.$

War drives profits while citizens pay the price. As fossil fuel giants cash in billions, Europeans are left struggling with rising energy costs. This isn’t our war and we shouldn’t pay for it. The path forward is clear: invest in clean, affordable energy, tax excessive profits, and protect citizens.

4 years ago Zelenskyy also addressed the European Parliament. In those days we were not sure Ukraine would manage to succeed against Russia. 4 years later Zelenskyy is still there, as a reminder of Ukraine's vigilant resistance against Putin's brutalities.

Europe will only be free when we are fossil free. We need an independent Europe, free from reliance on foreign fossil oligarchs and autocrats. Yet instead of backing green innovation, leaders push for deregulation. Our tax money should fund European jobs and autonomy, not the US or China.

As the climate crisis worsens, banks continuously pump billions of dollars in fossil fuel projects, increasing their investments from 707 billion USD in 2023 to 869 billion USD in 2024. Their climate pledges are worthless. We need to stop them from bankrupting our planet or it will bankrupt us all.
