Added to this, I think you can visually identify animals or locations quickly with onscreen text, and it's sort of odd to me that modern paleo docudramas don't employ this technique. (This fan-edit of Prehistoric Planet does, and it works really well!)

Yea, but this was still more balanced than I thought it would be, given the descriptions we got prior. So thank god for that, and for leaving us with the image of a speared mammoth

#PaleoAgainstAI The amount of anatomical, environmental & artistic knowledge one has to gain to reconstruct past worlds is staggering. It's a responsibility to share the knowledge w/ the respect it deserves. And unlike AI, we put great efforts to not misinform the public. PS. see Alt #sciart #art
Daohugou biota from Tiaojishan Formation, featuring an anurognathid Jeholopterus flying through a forest, surrounded by mayflies, and a fat salamander - Pangerpeton. A Volaticotherium is sitting on a branch in the background.A stylised illustration portraying an agitated Velociraptor in two versions: feathered and feathers removed. It aims to show how birdlike they were under the integument.A stylised drawing of Pterodaustro. The pterosaur is portrayed in shallow water (where it likely fed in using hundreds of teeth to filter food items), with hands positioned outwards as suggested by pterodactyloids footprints. The wing membranes of pterosaurs had sophisticated anatomy and are shown contracted. The fluff on the tail hints to the viewer that the animal was covered with pycnofiber. The Pterodaustro colours are inspired by flamingos, modern animals of similar feeding behaviour which take their pigments from their food.

One episode into #EvolutionWithChrisPackham , and there's already no doubt about the final score. 10/10. I REPEAT. 1 0 / 1 0 . ONE OF THE PINNACLES OF MODERN PALEO DOCUS. AN UTTER AND ABSOLUTE TRIUMPH OF EDUCATIVE, PROFESSIONAL, INFO-RICH STORYTELLING that never ever sees the audience as idiots.

Been watching, and just had to stop here after ep3 (the bat) and say congratulations!! Chris is a brilliant presenter, the little vignettes of the Ediacaran etc. are so pretty. This is the type of science shows that give me a real energy boost during my UNI studies, and it does it very well ❤️ A+

oddly enough, episode 1 has probably had the best simplified description of what a synapsid is in any "paleo-drama-documentary", and here they just went fuck it lol

I guess they didn't think the show would do as well as it did. Funnily though, here in Sweden 'Earth' was a bigger hit than WWD25

this epilogue was kind of fun. A dinosaur feeds fish, which feeds a pterosaur, which feeds a shark, which feeds a mosasaur. Finally the dinosaur becomes coral. It's the circle lifeee

Sure, but I think ocean anoxia and coral bleaching would have been more relevant to an episode focusing on an "ocean anoxic event". And corals are also THE most vulnerable parameter of the Earth system right now. I think the Ordovician episode will focus on sea-level change.

Carl-August W. @basaltweaver.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
This would have been the best episode, IF the modern-day ending didn't ignore ocean anoxia, acidification and the absolute tipping point of corals! instead we got whales... grr
