New paper out, led by Samuel Fischer: Quantifying the importance of ecosystem services in the context of agricultural carbon dioxide removal and rewetting – A deliberative choice experiment www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
As anthropogenic climate change progresses, the implementation of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is being debated more frequently. This research aims to shed light on preferences for ecosystem service provision associated with agricultural CDR measures, using deliberative choice experiments with a sample of 117 German citizens. It is one of the first studies transferring deliberative monetary valuation to the online format and valuing ecosystem services in the context of agricultural CDR and rewetting. Our findings indicate that habitat for biodiversity is potentially the most highly valued ecosystem service among those evaluated. Additionally, participants considered flood protection, climate regulation and water quality to be important, while preferences for soil erosion were lower. Furthermore, individuals expressed a higher willingness to pay after being confronted with information on the potential risk of mitigation deterrence, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

More questions posed in the first keynote by my UFZ colleague Daniela Thrän, demonstrating the complexity of analysing the sustainability potential of whatever bioeconomy is.
Person in front of a slide projected on the wall containing a graphical depiction of circular bioeconomy and five questions: Is the bioeconomy climate neutral? Do we have enough biomass? How to use the biomass most efficient? What kind of bioeconomy is desired? More from less?

Can anyone (ideally with FADN experience) tell me how representative these (extreme) numbers are for other years? 2018 was pretty bad, and I am wondering whether the subsidy count includes any one-off emergency payments…

Possible solution: stronger deliberative institutions as complement to courts "reminding" politicians of their (self-)commitments in a less reactive and more democratic ways

Key insights here (tl;dr court rulings are part of an iterative democratic process, possibly contesting majoritarian sentiments):
Person on a podium in front of a slide saying:
Democracy is a cyclical, ongoing process
* Secure prerequisites of democracy/participation
* Right to legal contestation and justification
* Litigation as conversation initiator
* Constitutional legal debate
* Compensating for governance failures and flaws/omissions
* Upholding incrementally developed legal standard

Der 7. September kommt sehr bald
