It's not great that Pope Francis was obstinate at first to allegations against priests. He did repent of that and apologize, did some good work the last five years. But it's only be five years of really addressing this issue... Took the papacy far too long.

I kinda imagine the usefulness of these actions by the administration is kind of the reverse of RFK's argument for there being an epidemic of autism. If they remove the collection of data from the equation, it's going to look like there's less accidents, injuries, and deaths under their policies.

The context I have for this argument and method is that this is also how they approach scripture. With as supportive as the evangelical church is of MAGA, their hermeneutic is right at home in its methodology.

It was probably Jan. 6 where it crystalized that no matter what Trump did, it'd never be enough to change some people's minds. I realize now that part of that phenom is that people attach their hopes to him. He doesn't have to say or do what they think, they have their own reality.

These institutions and safety nets are getting demolished right now, or at least massively hobbled, and I'm not optimistic enough in the Democrat party to believe they will do much to reinstate them when they get in power. Some things will happen, but they aren't against privatization either.

The government as a vehicle for more community-focused charity is probably the most ideal, absolutely. I'm not a Christian who believes churches should do all of it. They don't have the capacity either, or the proclivity, wholesale. I'm just saying the government doesn't either.

The irony of these statements is that the only churches left after you start taxing them will be megachurches. Rural churches, urban churches, providing childcare, food security, shelter to the unhoused, and check-ins & transport to the sick and elderly will disappear.
