I've got some great news: It is thoroughly satisfying to share what I hope will be my last-ever update on the 2023 Texas book ban, a.k.a. House Bill 900, a.k.a. the READER Act, which is that a federal judge has stopped the law with a permanent injunction. chrisbarton.info/the-case-aga...

Axolotl attendees, and I think they’ll agree: The No Kings march in Austin has been a joy. I saw fellow church members, former coworkers, another children’s author, an actual rock star, and above all a diverse, peaceful, and good-natured assembly of people who love this country passionately.

And how about this one: "Darn it, I gave away all of my Spanish books and of course now I’m trying to learn it again. How can a person ever get rid of a book, I ask you, and yet I must because I need room on my shelves." Did Deborah Heiligman say that, or did I?

And who said this one? "That ties into one of my all-time favorite music nonfiction books, a John Lennon biography by Ray Coleman—just titled Lennon—that I read over and over when I was in high school, just as I’d done with the Great Brain books several grades earlier." Me, or Victor Piñeiro?

The matter-of-fact wallop of the last paragraph here:
In a statement Wednesday to The Waco Bridge, ICE described the deportation as follows:

"Sergio Garcia, a 65-year-old twice-deported criminal alien from Mexico, illegally entered the U.S., was afforded full due process under the law, and was ordered deported by an immigration judge at great taxpayer expense. In complete defiance to our nation's system of laws, he fled from authorities and remained an immigration fugitive for more than 23 years. After law enforcement finally caught up with him earlier this year, he was arrested and deported to Mexico on March 25."

The regional ICE office in Waco is located at the federal courthouse on Franklin Avenue, four blocks from where Sergio's Food Truck plied its trade for 12 years.

If there’s an author you appreciate, one of the simplest, most helpful, least expensive things you can do for them is ask your public library to add that author’s newest book to their collection. Many library websites have a form for that. So give it a try, and make an author’s day!

A8 The nonfiction book for kids that changed how I thought about... nonfiction books for kids was THE DINOSAURS OF WATERHOUSE HAWKINS, which came out just as I was getting started writing books for young readers. It made me realize just how much better things had gotten since I was a kid. #TLSkyChat

A6 #TLSkyChat I don't know that kids require much convincing that NF is amazing, unless they've picked up a negative impression from adults with zero understanding of what NF for kids has been like in the 21st century. Too many grownups still make what I call nonfiction face:

I’m always glad to see librarian and #kidlit specialist Sylvie Shaffer answer questions from Washington Post readers, but her mention of my nonfiction picture book about glitter next to The Great Stink makes me even happier. (Btw there’s a VERY SUBTLE poop reference in my book.) wapo.st/41zVf61
Q: My 6-year-old son loves encyclopedia-type books, such as the DK Eyewitness books. This makes bedtime reading particularly challenging for me as a fiction lover. How can I get my curious son into stories? I have tried the "Wild Robot" series, lots of the Kate DiCamillo chapter books and many graphic novels. Please send help, one more book about the Roman Empire will send me over the edge.
(I recognize I should be grateful for any interest in books, but it would improve my evenings tremendously if we could read something we're both interested in.)A: Oh man, reading aloud those browsable nonfiction tomes can be rough. I wonder if you could satisfy your understandable desire for story and narrative drive while still leaning into your son's curiosity: How about some age-appropriate narrative nonfiction, or perhaps some short-form biographies?A couple of excellent, well told, true stories in picture-book format that balance science with history are "The Great Stink:

I’m teaming up again with my GLITTER EVERYWHERE! editor & publisher to provide another scientific, historical & cultural overview of an everyday something that we have strong, conflicting feelings about: sweetness and sweeteners. Coming in 2027 & illustrated by the terrific Irene Chan, it’s SWEET!
Alyssa Mito Pusey at Charlesbridge has acquired world rights to Sweet! by Chris Barton (I.) (Shark vs. Train), and Diane Earley has acquired world rights for illustration by Irene Chan. It's a non-sugarcoated nonfiction picture book about sweetness and sweeteners-sugar, honey, syrup, and all sorts of artificial alternatives-that examines how humanity's sweet tooth has evolved and continues to shape us. Publication is planned for spring 2027; Victoria Wells Arms at HG Literary represented the author, and Christy Ewers at the CAT Agency represented the illustrator.

One of my kids just brought up the topic of country artists with songs touching on the theme of reincarnation — he mentioned Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Tyler Childers, Roger Miller, and the Highwaymen, and I pointed out Iris Dement and this entire LP (much loved by me) by Willie Nelson. But who else?

WE MATCH!

Chris Barton, Sharon Glick (Illustrator)A dog park is filled with all types of dogs. Some of them match because they look the same, but others match because of what they like or don't. We Match! It is an entertaining story about all the ways we can match each other and have fun while figuring it all out. This art style is scrappy, just like the dogs in the park, and there is always another little detail to find.
