The ad, which ethics experts said could violate federal law, shows Mr. Trump vowing to “expel the warmongers” from the government and fight the “deep state,” even as he wages a war with Iran.

Get Rid of All Things Trump, by Ted Rall
Politics is war. In war, capturing and replacing a rival head of state does not constitute victory.

Unfortunately, I don't see any Democrat with the vision or skill to lead the country through the swamp Trump has created. Then again, FDR didn't really know what he was doing in 1933. It took him many years of trial-and-error to deal with the crisis he inherited. And he need four terms to do it.

Trump now demands that South America and Central America change their names to South and Central something else because they're not really part of America. And Canada is no longer part of North America. Only we are Americans, Trump says.

Buckley faced the same dilemma with racist nuts from the South. He knew perfectly well that they were evil, but were also the largest group of political conservatives in the country and a major source of NR subscribers. So Buckley pandered to them, lightly.

Bruce Bartlett @bartlettb.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Being a Catholic, Buckley should have been more sensitive to the Protestant drift into fundamentalism and biblical literalism, which leads inevitably to blasphemy from the Catholic point of view. But because the Protestant nuts were an important part of the conservative coalition, Buckley demurred.

That unitary executive nonsense got started under Bush, who also appointed its chief advocate as chief justice. If only for that we can blame much of Trump's evil on Bush, whose cowardice is on full display as he says nothing while democracy dies.
1154
Bruce Bartlett @bartlettb.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Unfortunately I was one of very, very few conservatives or Republicans who saw Bush this way. The strange thing is I was still a loyal Republican when I wrote my Impostor book. I thought I was helping save my party from certain loss in 2006 and 2008. Instead I was treated like a traitor. Eyeopening.

As you know, I turned against the GOP during Bush 43. I saw in him what everyone now sees in Trump--stupidity, arrogance, unwillingness to listen to the advice of experts, shoot-first/ask questions later mentality, obsessive Republican partisanship with no regard to conservative principles etc.
