If the govt pushes ahead with this, it will be a major backwards step. At a time of energy insecurity and rapidly rising gas costs, we need to speed up heat pump installations AND reform the electricity market to bring costs down. Pulling the rug away now is not smart at all.

Polanski reduced a Labour majority of around 28k to around 3k ..... that's a pretty massive swing to the Greens. And that in the face of a popularity bounce for the new Labour prime minister. He may not have won but to suggest that he polled poorly or that the Greens achieved nothing is nonsense.

I don't disagree but with respect, I think you're missing the point. A good electoral system needs to reflect what people have voted for - both good and bad and it's down to the decent parties to make the argument to keep the bad people out. It shouldn't be down to a rigged system.

It's a reasonable argument ...... except that I'm not sure it ain't broken. The idea that 30 odd percent of the vote can give you 70 odd percent of the votes in parliament doesn't sit comfortably. Of course of things revert to 2 party politics then maybe FPTP is fine.

Yes I agree ....... but I suspect PR is the only way you can be reasonably certain of keeping Reform out of government unless the Tories get into bed with them (a future version could I suppose but I doubt it). There are trade offs but on balance, I think it's probably worth it.

Around 48% ....... so it's very much on a knife edge. In FPTP, Burnham could win well but under PR it'll be much tighter. So the idea that the Greens could influence stuff isn't as daft as many may think.

Across the country, they have around 8% of the vote which under a PR system could land them with between 40 and 50 seats - that's not nothing and in a tight race could tip the balance. If you look at where current polling stands, the right wing parties collectively add up to ........

I wasn't talking about the by election - I was talking about the situation Polanski was in - whichever way he jumped, a load of people would have been upset - so he ended up pleading no one and with everyone on his back.. A principled stand would have been better and he should have argued for it.
