I learned of Bitcoin in ~2009(+/- 1 year) from a coworker. I had heard various explanations, none of which made any sense. This excerpt from "The Nerd Reich" makes it plain. Cryptocurrency mining wastes electricity. Bitcoin only increases in value if people buy the scheme of it all.

"To create a Bitcoin, specialized computers compete to solve complicated math puzzles in a process called "mining". The first computer to solve the puzzle gets rewarded with new Bitcoins. Bitcoin mining guzzles enormous amounts of electricity. These math puzzles serve no purpose except to make Bitcoins hard to mine, creating a sense of scarcity. Bitcoin's value rests on the notion that this digital scarcity --pointless puzzles solved by burning electricity-- is worth real money."
