one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

I'm extremely proud that this debate is happening in my building a few floors beneath me. It's humbling to work alongside the WKAR team that provides a real public service to the region and the state. (If you're local, please strongly consider supporting @wewill2026.bsky.social! :p)
Image of Will Lawrence's post featuring his debate with Tom Barrett today, taking place in the WKAR television studio at Michigan State University's Communication Arts and Sciences building (where I work in a different department).

Also a note: the committee seriously deliberated hosting the conference online this year and decided in a year where AMS is online we wanted the sense of physical community only a physical gathering can convey. I am so excited to have @williamrayers.bsky.social host in Orlando this year!!

fwiw I feel similarly about AOC and Mamdani? I think we are underestimating the appeal of seeing pleasant-looking charismatic people as our leaders rather than aging great-grandfathers.

🦇🦇🦇 FREE Halloween video game music! 🧛🧛🧛 🎃🎃🎃 ocremix.org/tag/halloween 👻👻👻 OC ReMix has 100+ VGM arrangements for your haunted house, to (playfully?!) scare your kiddos, or otherwise embrace the otherworldly nature of All Hallows' Eve! :-) Castlevania, Silent Hill, Resident Evil... MUHAHAHAHA!
OC ReMix #4945: Friday the 13th "You and Your Friends Are Dead." by Juan Medrano

https://ocremix.org/remix/OCR04945

Trick or treat!!! It's a bit of both, as I've outsourced this year's Halloween writeups to the community-at-large, who came through in spades! (If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go as a team!) A tremendous THANK YOU to gravitygauntlet, Chimpazilla, minusworld, The Vodoú Queen, WiFiSunset, and Argle for taking time out, which has easily made this the biggest Halloween ReMix release day in OCR history! Enjoy this magnificent seven of vampire-, haunted castle-, hellride-, dystopia-, greedy-capitalist-, blood-drippingly-, hack-and-slash-appropriate VGM arrangements! :-)

Rounding out our treasure trove of macabre offerings is rock GAWD Juan Medrano with a lil' John Carpenter/Halloween influence on a DASTARDLY NES game, Friday the 13th! We've got Juan, we've got John, and now [/shrieks] we've got JASON! :-O I HATED this game as a kid, not for being bad... for being SCARY and stressful as shit! I could NEVER keep the kiddos or the camp counselors alive, ugh. Well, at least Juan says he had fun:

"Just a remix of the Friday the 13th cabin theme I started several years ago. Wanted an atmospheric, spooky 80s horror film sound with modern, heavy guitars. Pretty simple. Spooky rock/metal/whatev. As always, had a blast playing around with those vintage synth sounds."

The fun Juan had taking on this dark, forboding, earworming theme was noticed by judge prophetik music:

"opens with bells and some distant strings. big prototypically evil bass synth comes in soon after as well as some limited kit with loads of verb on it. [...] guitar comes in at 1:25 and sounds great, as expected. 2:18 the drum rhythm changes a bit and is more intense which is nice [...]

Weirdly I don’t think it’s scary _enough_ to enjoy as an adult? It’s a live action Saturday morning cartoon take on a witch rather than something actually frightening (which might have been the appeal when I was much younger).

Really glad to see this response so quickly -- no equivocating, and it does not take a long time to do the right thing here. And yes, an acknowledgement that this hurts the people who know you, work with you. It's not easy for anyone involved.

Food for thought: The author of the Cornell Sun piece that broke the story, Cereese Qusba, is a Tri-Delt. Her investigation took 23 months. She dedicated HALF HER COLLEGE CAREER ensuring that the victim at her sorority's event (as per the paper) would see justice delivered. Give her the Pulitzer.

You know, in most of my father's social circles (he's a 20 year Navy vet; a storied career for an excellent storyteller) some asshat in their 40s wouldn't get away with describing the military as "weak" in need of change and yet This Guy seems to do it all the time. Nobody hates the military more.

This slaps. Good for the mayor. I again note that _this week_ it's Cornell but it is not limited to one town; we need more of this from every college town local government in the country. Accountability for both student perpetrators and university administrators who don't follow through.

Reminder to men as we read and process the Cornell news: If you have not been asked to guard someone's drink or be part of a group checking in on someone's safety and security when there is alcohol around, the odds are that you have not established yourself as a trustworthy person in your spaces.

Yeah it’s not lost on me that it was a man who suggested family meal planning is rote. Research and loved experience shows that women structure their invisible labor to make the labor the men in their lives are willing to do predictable, ergo suitable to routinize.

One more core memory from this list: we lost the instruction manual to Prince of Persia in a move (my father was in the Navy -- we moved every couple years growing up). I didn't know the debug code for years. I played by guessing which letter potion to drink on the copyright screen after Level 1!

(in my adult life, maybe my favorite gaming memory is @musicologess.bsky.social asking me to watch a video with her only to reveal that the final track in Startropics had an extra voice we had never heard. It was as if she had time-traveled and given my eight year-old self a gift. I was dumbstruck.)
