🌍 Air pollution is a modifiable risk factor for dementia. Reducing exposure to polluted air could help protect brain health and support dementia prevention. The study adds to growing evidence of the potential impact of air quality on the brain. 🔗: www.barcelonabeta.org/en/news/news...

A BBRC study links air pollution to early signs of neuroinflammation in people at risk of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly in women
The results suggest that chronic exposure to traffic-related air pollution is associated with increases in biomarkers of astroglial reactivity and inflammation, particularly in women.

🧪 Researchers also found sex-related differences in IL-6, a marker involved in inflammatory processes. In women, increased GFAP levels partially explained the association between air pollution exposure and declines in attention and executive function.

🔬 The study followed 226 cognitively unimpaired participants from the ALFA+ cohort over three years. Greater exposure to traffic-related air pollution was associated with increases in GFAP, a biomarker of astrocyte reactivity in the brain.
