The Declaration of Independence contains a clause bitterly accusing the king of "endeavor[ing] to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither." A relevant accusation, yes?

I want to thank the kind Uber taxi driver, Noriyuki, in Tokyo who found my bag--complete with passport, wallet, and phone--and returned it to my hotel. But no thanks to Uber corporation, which is impossible to contact.

Let me recommend the film "La Grazia" by Piero Sorrentino. Few movies nowadays are so thoughtful. Few inspire as much reflection, pity and fear. A great plus in our benighted times is depicting a president assailed by doubts and hesitation.

I tried to get AI image services to draw an oval table around which were seated 16 people. They could not do it.They drew 17 or more people. Then I instructed them to draw no more than 16 and no less than 16 people. Another failure. Give it a try yourself. I conclude that AI is another tulip craze.

I free associate Helen Frankenthaler's "Tout-à-coup" www.pafa.org/museum/colle..., now on exhibit at Northwestern U. Block Gallery (Evanston, IL), with a late medieval book of hours such as en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taymout.... In short, Frankenthaler was amazing!

Who has read and has thoughts about Kang, "Vegetarian"? I read it and hated it. Well written and vivid, yes. Clearly a screed against male abuse of women, ok. Maybe the veg is a modern Daphne? I'm trying to make sense of the Nobel prize.

I'm about to be interviewed for "Sciences Humaines" about why we today are (still) falling in love. But the question I want to pose in return is: is the love of the past implied by that "still" the same as the love "we" have today? And indeed, is "my" love the same as "yours"? Wish me luck!

Just back from the Gustave Caillebotte exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago, I urge all who live within 100 miles of the city to go to that amazing show. Caillebotte's ability to capture of the play of light alone is worth the trip. But most marvelous is the lost world he evokes. Go!

I'm reading De Waal's "Hare" trying to like it because it was recommended to me by friends I admire. But I find it strangely unmoving. Interesting, yes. And it's wonderful to know the identities of the people in Renoir's "Boating Party." But, I'd love to know other thoughts about this book.
