My parents had a similar desk, although I don't think the top shelves ever had glass doors. When opened, the desk part looks very much like yours. Right now, there isn't a lot I can do with it, but I can't ring myself to get rid of it either.
A tall desk made of dark wood with three shelves. The first two shelves are loaded with books, the top shelf has a variety of knick-knacks.

So I'm re-reading Oliver Twist for the first time in many years, and the impressive length of the very first sentence reminds me that Charles Dickens was a genius in many ways - in this case, at being a paid-by-the-word freelance writer.

I took a tour of Hart Island this morning, and it was windy, freezing, and utterly fascinating. It concentrated on women who were buried in or associated with the island, but I fully intend to try to get to the island again to see more of it. Many thanks to the Parks Dept staff who guided us today.
Long field with sticks and black letters in rows. Rocky Field with a sign sign that says Hart Island, a pole. Do what's left, small religious sculptors to its right, and trees and people in the background.A gravestone with a tiny other gravestone leaning against it in front of a white picket fence.

This made me smile today.
A little snowman with buttons down its front, a carrot nose, a blue scarf, and blue and orange buttons for eyes in a patch of snow in front of a building.

Found this in an old book we once picked up in a used bookstore. So what do you think? Should I see if I have any aptitude?
Old paper with a photo of a man in a suit, and says Do you have a restless urge to write? Old article headlined We want to test your writing aptitude.

My local deli is adding an extra charge for egg sandwiches -- but apparently, it only applies to Time Lords.

Going through our backlog of books, came across this title and just had to share it.
Book titled Trumps of Doom, the new Amber novel by Roger Zelazny with a drawing of a robot in a white hood.

I ran out of one type of candle and had to start a different box of smaller candles, so my final night menorah is a little... uneven.

In the 1950s and early 60s, when an SF author was short on cash, they often resorted to speedily writing bad space operas or crappy sex books, usually under a pseudonym. The most surprising thing about this hilariously cliched novel is that it was written under the author's real name.
Cover of book named Virgin Planet, showing bare chested man bound and surrounded by young women in bras and short skirts. Back of book headed "If you're really a man -- prove it!" Several paragraphs of text follow.

My mother was a teacher in the NYC public schools for decades, during which she taught generations of children. She got her Masters of Education, demonstrated against McCarthyism and the Vietnam War, volunteered for Planned Parenthood, and was politically active well into her 80s.
