And the truth is this. If it wasn’t for Carlos, I would be in the dark as to what my vote is actually accomplishing in this area and what it has cost others. I live in Suburbia, the quintessential soccer mom who homeschools and makes homemade marshmallows. My immediate world is virtually untouched by this issue and without Carlos, I’m afraid I would be ignorant as to what is ripping through our country, coast to coast, and devastating specific communities, and thousands of homes. I would think what I am told without questioning. There are only criminals, or mostly criminals in these detention centers. But I have seen with my own eyes – this is not the case. There are more “Carloses” in there than I have the stomach to admit to.

Today, Angela went to see if she could visit Carlos again according to the website information… and she was able to spend another hour with Carlos! Because of the shooting at the Dallas’ detention center and the heightened security, Angela was afraid that the visitation would be canceled, but it was not.

Angela would like us to share this reflection with all of you. In the tradition of Leo Tolstoy, Henry David Thoreau, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, James Lawson, César Chávez, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and Malala Yousafzai– among many countless names we will never hear of– there is never any justification for violence. Ever. The most power lies in not violence, but the idea of “Ahimsa,” an ancient Indian concept of non-injury, and compassion. The four key principles of nonviolence resistance are 1) unearned suffering, 2) love over hate, 3) separating deeds from doers, and 4) peaceful resistance through non-cooperation.

Carlos was given his wedding ring and is wearing it. He and Angela purchased their simple wedding rings over 24 years ago from C&S Jewelers in Downingtown.

During Angela’s visit with Carlos, he remarked that their arms were finally the same color. Angela– being exposed to the sun in St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, Miami, the Everglades, Orlando, the Florida-Georgia line, and now Lousiana– now matches Carlos’ skin, having not been in the sun for the last couple months.

Carlos also recounted to Angela that yesterday there were more guards posted at dinner; this is because it was “chicken” night and many of the men hide extra pieces of chicken in napkins in their pants, so they have something to eat later in the evening. Carlos is learning that the ritual of the men in this detention center is to hide food during the day so they can eat it later at night.

Carlos explained that Maruchan Ramen is the base of most of their meals– that men will mix these Ramen noodles with anything they can “squirrel away” during the day and partake in…
