This token coin is the first to have the word “Canada” on it. It’s from the Copper Company of Upper Canada—which never existed. And the token never circulated. But all sorts of reproductions were made of it. #SaturdayArtifact

In the 17th century, British settlements began appearing on #Newfoundland’s east coast—so did money. A fragment of a coin like this James I ¼ laurel gold piece turned up in Ferryland, south of St. John’s in 2002. #SaturdayArtifact

Chinese ingot money—or sycee—was a type of money used in imperial China until the early 20th century. Often made by silversmiths for use in their regions, there was no uniform style to it, varying greatly in design. This piece is referred to as “saddle money.” #FridayFunFact

The last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was born #OTD in 1830. Franz Joseph I ruled from 1848 until his death in 1916. In effect, the Empire died with him. This is a specimen coin for the silver corona. Higher value coronas are gold coins.
