Yesss babes!! Say it LOUDER for the people in the back! I RARELY have time to sit down and read (my 4yr and 3yr olds are both autistic), so I do audiobooks while I’m cleaning and just doing other mom stuff.

But also, building on this, oral storytelling far predates the written novel. By thousandsssssssss of years. We told stories to each other as humans long before we wrote them down. So, like, don't be a dick about active listening to a story. It's as valid a way to consume a tale as anything else.

And then BAM, the guilt hits. It’s natural to wonder the “what ifs” in life but it often feels like we don’t love our children for who they are—which isn’t the case at all. It’s a vicious little cycle we are caught in. We love our profoundly autistic children, we are just tired

000

Pilar Del Rey @balladsofmenn.bsky.social · 02/05/2026

As a parent you are in constant battle of feeling like the shittiest parent on Earth and worrying over everything. You think about all the “what ifs” in life. What if he wasn’t autistic? What if he didn’t have this one thing (e.i. PICA, eloping, etc) how much easier things might be?

100

Pilar Del Rey @balladsofmenn.bsky.social · 02/05/2026

He doesn’t handle grocery shopping well, so I have to strategically plan around that. Endless therapies and IEP meetings. The eloping. The dirty looks you get from people when they having a meltdown, and just SO much more. It’s EXHAUSTING.

100

Pilar Del Rey @balladsofmenn.bsky.social · 02/05/2026

The worries for them differ greatly. My middle can advocate for himself where his brother cannot. The constant need to watch him so he doesn’t do anything dangerous. He has PICA, so he is forever trying to eat things he shouldn’t. He’s an eloper and doesn’t sleep. And of course, he is nonverbal.

100

Pilar Del Rey @balladsofmenn.bsky.social · 02/05/2026

This will probably be an hot take but autism sucks. It does. For the parents who have profoundly autistic kiddos, it is different than having a level 1 or even a level 2 kiddo. My other son who is a 1 older is a level 2. They are totally different.

Just found out about #questpit and I missed… now I’m really sad.

000

Pilar Del Rey @balladsofmenn.bsky.social · 01/05/2026

No, you are totally right Nicholas. When I published my first book last year, I thought about using Amazon free ISBN but I would be under their imprint—which is something I definitely want. So my husband and I made our own imprint to publish under.

020

Pilar Del Rey @balladsofmenn.bsky.social · 01/05/2026

When you buy just one ISBN it’s $125, whereas the 10pk is $295. You drop more money in the moment but so much cheaper in the long run. Especially if you know you will be writing several books in the future.

020

Pilar Del Rey @balladsofmenn.bsky.social · 01/05/2026

ISBNs are EXPENSIVE but the necessary evil to self publishing. It’s how your book is identified. Definitely more economical to buy the 10pk but you are still dropping a pretty penny. #booksky #historicalromance #maryqueenofscots #cleopatra #queensofmisfortune
