Thank you to Hanna Gaard for providing me with the ARC of her debut indie novel, "No Gods West of Here." A frontier adventure romantasy, "No Gods West of Here" is a brilliant exploration of the intersection between myth and history, and an exploration of the heroine's quest to claim her own agency.

Myth and History: A Review of No Gods West of Here, by Hanna Gaard
The line between myth and history is thin, and it is a line that becomes thinner all the time as we learn more about the past and how stories have influenced cultures across the world. As long as language has existed, myths have existed. A form of storytelling meant to explain certain facets of reality, from why lighting strikes to why a culture may hold certain customs and beliefs.

Well this definitely gets first place for the dumbest thing I’ve read all day. The DSA is handing dems victory after victory and teaching a material lesson on how to combat conservatives. The only people sabotaging the Democratic Party are establishment dems attacking their own members.

Another book club pick! "Spoiler Alert" by Olivia Dade is a cute romance where fanfiction is nearly a character itself. Following actor Marcus and geologist April, "Spoiler Alert" is about shared interests, messed up family dynamics, and building healthy relationships in the face of everything else.

Literary Romance: A Review of Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade
The world of fanfiction is vast and ancient, or at least ancient for the contemporary era. For as long as fandoms have existed, fanfiction has existed. From the modern emergence of Archive of Our Own, also known as Ao3, to the Kirk and Spock fanfiction in the immediate wake of the original Star Trek series, to the Icelandic translation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula which the translator took in a very different direction to the original text. For most of its history, fanfiction was both widely read and niche, existing in independent zines or message boards.

A Woman’s Job: A Review of Monstrous Regiment, by Terry Pratchett
What are commonly called traditional gender roles have never really been all that traditional. Gender roles have varied from culture to culture, transforming and changing over time based on socioeconomical conditions, religious conversions, and wars. As long as organized warfare has existed, women have served in the military, acted as strategists, and led armies. Gender roles are not, and have never been, static, and “traditional gender roles” as we currently know them are most often used to both oppress women under patriarchal systems and eliminate societal acceptance of genders and gender expression that do not conform to these roles.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

Thank you to Books Forward for providing with me with the ARC for "Wild Hunt", by Alison Levy! A more than satisfying sequel to the first book in her Witch's Odyssey series, "Wild Hunt" continues the story of Georgette, following her emotional growth and deepening of her community bonds.
cityonthemoonblog.wordpress.com
The Spellwork of Community: A Review of Wild Hunt, by Alison Levy
Building a community can be a lot of hard work, but sometimes allowing yourself to be accepted into one can be even harder. Community can take many shapes and forms; from close-knit family groups, to loving and accepting friends, to larger forms like queer or ethnic groups coming together and looking out for one another in a society where doing so is difficult. A community is not just bound by physical location, but by a shared ethos and understanding, a desire to care for every member of that community, and to accept care in return.

Fun Harry Potter and
JK Rowling Facts For Potterheads!

Prince Andrew, photographed with underage girls with Jeffrey Epstein, was invited in 2025 to the set of the new Harry Potter show years after his implication with Epstein..

JK Rowling once described Lolita as a "tragic love story" in an interview.

JK Rowling's team directly invited Jeffrey Epstein to the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Epstein was at least seen to be connected enough to Rowling for folks to go to him to be connected with her.

Rowling once accidentally replied to a twitter post by a child's mom with hate speech copied into her clipboard.

Rowling has used her Harry Potter money to aid in the legal expenses of white supremacists because she agreed with their transphobia as well as successful judicial attacks on children by the UK supreme court.

"So This is Ever After", by F. T. Lukens, is a cute, fun queer fantasy romance set after the heroes have already saved the day. According to the prophecy, seventeen year old Arek is the hero who will slay the Vile One and usher in 1000 years of peace. Except the prophecy never said what comes next.

Falling Action: A Review of So This is Ever After, by F. T. Lukens
Nearly every story follows a similar narrative structure. While there are some variations, such as Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey and the three act structure commonly seen in film and stage, they can all be mapped out on the same chart. It begins with the exposition, where the reader is introduced to the characters, the setting, and aspects of the main conflict. This is then following by rising action, which includes the majority of the story. Rising action throws the main characters into the central conflict, escalating and escalating until the story finally reaches its climax.

"Demon World Boba Shop" is the first novel in the series of the same name, by R. C. Joshua. A cozy fantasy LitRPG, the story follows Arthur as he gets another chance at life in a fantasy world with one fatal flaw: boba doesn't exist!

Tea Master: A Review of Demon World Boba Shop, by R. C. Joshua
With every year, more and more cozy fantasy series enter the world of readers looking for a story that combines escapism with stories and characters that are simply pleasant. Cozy fantasy still has stakes, sometimes dire stakes, but every reader goes into these books with the understanding that everything will turn out alright by the end of it. That does not diminish the trials and tribulations that the characters undergo, but it does help readers stay invested in the narrative and characters. We like seeing the day-to-day lives of characters as they move throughout the world, meeting new people and doing things that make them happy.

We are. We’ve been going after visa and Mastercard since the news came out. However, Itch and companies that capitulate aren’t innocent in this. They had months to tell us what was happening, to take the lead. If they had tried and lost, that is far better than not trying at all.
160
Baldur5 @baldur5.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
Correct, Itch is a company which makes money when creators sell games to their customers. I expect such a company to enable said creators to sell their product to customers, rather than actively work to prevent that from happening because of a handful of bigots.

Baldur5 @baldur5.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
If they de-list their games, nobody gets paid because you can no longer buy the games. This will affect creators as they can no longer sell their games on the platform. They may be a small company, but they have an active customer base with experience in direct action.

Baldur5 @baldur5.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
This is a disingenuous take and you know it. The options for Itch were to do something and risk failing, or do nothing and definitely fail. They chose to do nothing. At this rate, they will still go out of business as their customer base and creators abandon the platform.

Exactly what people have taken the initiative to do now: go after Visa and MC directly. We're calling, we're emailing, we're not letting them know peace. Itch had the opportunity to take the lead on this, to rally support. Instead, they chose to do nothing and capitulate without warning.

You are free to your opinion. However, you continue to be disingenuous in attacking everyone else without any alternatives of your own. What is your realistic plan for Itch to push back and resist the payment processors? Doing nothing is not an acceptable answer.

Again, you are intentionally missing the point in order to demand others explain basic concepts to you and defend capitulation to fascism. The ways in which Itch could have pushed back and mobilized their user base over the last several months have been explained to you multiple times.

Baldur5 @baldur5.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
You are intentionally missing the point. The pressure against Itch began in April. They have had months to try and resist, to tell us what's happening. Instead, they did nothing, then betrayed their users at the last second without warning. Trying and failing is better than doing nothing at all.

All art is political, and few genres of literature are more political than hard science-fiction. With science-fiction, the author is typically presenting a vision of the future. Sometimes it is a future they would like to see, but more often it is a warning of a future they would like to approve. They show us a future where technology has evolved past our current level, and write about how that technology is integral to the story. How the characters use that technology, and how it interacts with the setting, is political.
