Ash, Anabel, Pikachu, Goodra, and Anabel’s Salamence. I originally had Charizard in place of Goodra but he ended up being quite annoying to draw at this angle, so I opted for the more simplified slug dragon.

Ash’s outfit is based on his appearance in Power of Us, a pretty underrated older Ash design IMO.

Anabel is a hybrid of her original and SM designs. I quite liked how her long hair turned out.

Had to work in “lame-o’s” in somehow.

Anabel calling him “Junior” off-panel; she’s a bit older than the two boys and I imagine she would never miss an opportunity to roast the former Pokemon abuser.

Some favorite teams throughout the generations! What are some of yours?

Pearl and Platinum were my first true games and by far the ones I had spent the most time in, but it actually took me years to come back and do a proper playthrough with a proper team instead of "Starter, Staraptor, Legendary." This was I believe the first time I nicknamed my team, though there was no theme. Some highlights: Forrest the Torterra ended up sweeping E4 Flint, something I only tried as a joke. People rag on Luxray for being a physical electric type with only Spark but honestly? Intimidate and STAB Thunderbolt take care of all the Gyarados's you need. Nova the Togekiss was appropriately the star of the team, even with her abysmal Jolly Nature. Togekiss just does whatever you need it to do. Gastrodon didn't do much until evolving but once she did she was the go-to-Galactic grunt beater. Mandy the Scizor made Candice and Lucien almost trivial, and Yuki the Froslass did her job of OHKOing Garchomp. I also liked that this team, if you squint, parallelled my rival's a bit.

I chose White 2 over Black 2 mainly for that early Braviary and I didn't even end up using him. I did for a little, but later I ran into a rustling grass Altaria, and since I'd never used one I thought I'd try it out. She ended up sweeping Drayden, most of Ghetsis, and most of Iris.

This time there was a theme, if you couldn't tell by the names, and that dictated most of the members of the team. Serperior, Electivire and Jellicent were a given. Pinsir was a nice surprise, and Erza the Bisharp ended up replacing Gajeel the Aggron who just wasn't pulling his weight.

I'll admit, I went into Legends Z-A with the lowest expectations. And I was delighted to be wrong.

I immediately named Chikorita Annette, but my Sassy "Claude" of a Froakie convinced me to go full Fire Emblem for the rest of the team.

I REALLY wanted to get an Alpha Tyrunt so I could have a biblically accurate Tyrantrum, but the RNG gods said no, and so, I took the one female and named her Edelgard to honor her short-queen status. This made naming Charizard Ferdinand very easy. Dragonite became Mercedes because you can't have Annette without Mercie.

Marianne just seemed fitting for Froslass, that's all.

Possibly my favorite team from my favorite playthrough, ever! Part of that is almost definitely because Moon was a much-needed pick-me-up after the 2016 election, but also because I just felt extra attached to these guys and their region. 5/6 of them have special stipulations for obtaining them, so catching them felt like its own mini adventure. Rowlet of course has the iconic starter cutscene; Pikachu and female Salandit are rare encounters; Jangmo-o doesn't show up until near the finale; and I don't think I need to explain Mareanie. Sandshrew was the only one with a mundane encounter, but paradoxically, that made him the odd one out.

I especially loved giving them their own Z-crystals; it really gave the battles an anime feel to them. While Sun and Moon are now sadly infamous for the amount of cutscenes, they mostly don't bother me (the trainer school can rot in hell)

This was the first team I had a set theme for the nicknames, though I don't remember why said theme was "Greek." Perhaps Decidueye brought to mind both Athena and Artemis.

I almost added Lunala to the team for the Elite 4, but I just liked everyone too much to box them.

Yeah they SAY he's the strongest but I'm calling bull; ANY decent mon with a ground-type move can sweep him in game and in the anime he plays so poorly I can't take him seriously. The only "clever" play he makes is Ice Punch on Electivire and even then, Ash SHOULD have seen that coming at that point

I would have just had Ash recall Torterra on account of he can't fight Drapion and the Poison instead of going for Synthesis (y'know, the play that Ash KNOWS screwed him over the last time), do Pikachu vs Froslass next, swap Ninjask for Magmortar and have Torterra take him down instead before poison

Validating as this might be, I do think Ash winning with 2 mons still standing kind of sucks the tension out of of the climax; you can't exactly have a "snatching victory from the jaws of defeat moment" when you have a ground-type in the back It's why I've never liked the Crasher Wake fight

I used to think so for Buizel but now I don’t think Aggron and Gastrodon weren’t as free as fans believe. They weren’t pushing for game but they weren’t just rolling over and letting themselves get KO’d. So Buizel’s win is legit in my eyes

Yeah no there are several instances later in the series where the gang would definitely had brought up the events of M10; there's no reason they wouldn't tell Cynthia or Cyrus (who they don't know is evil yet) beyond the movies being ambiguously canon
