If you know someone who might be able to help with two or three frames of doom sprite artwork, anything would be better than my own attempts. I dunno why it made my fingers look so fat and stubby 😅

I also added this little guy who takes psychic damage as you scroll, but I think I want to redo the hands without AI before I launch, because....yeah. And I guess I can just host it on xrdoom.com instead of trying to find another custom domain. But yeah, that's where it is now.

Well...I changed it to be clearer that the default view is shareware-only wads. I added bring-your-own-WAD support for Doom and Doom 2 registered versions, and added Heretic support as well. I also added a flagging system, which people can use to complain about broken or badly-licensed wads.

I tried to talk to my wife about datacenters. She said I was too close to the topic and probably a bit biased. 🤷‍♂️

I still plan to get back to it, I'm just very drama-averse so I want to make sure I do it right 😅

tbh it was the combination of the domain getting cancelled and a few articles focusing (predictably) on the legality, rehashing doom mod scene drama from decades back, and I decided there were some changes I wanted to make before relaunching to clear that up. Then I got busy with other stuff.

Yup. We grew up in a world where our view of it was shaped by the programming we watched, which was decided by billionaires and advertisers. The internet came along and turned it into a choose-your-own adventure. Now we're right back at programmed feeds controlled by billionaires and advertisers.

life imitates art imitates life. turns out we were the stochastic parrots all along.

Oh ok, I read your :( as the frown of a defeated open source developer who worked his ass off to write something about his project only to be reminded of how much work there was left to do 😅

Sorry, didn't mean to turn your (very interesting) article into a bug report, I was just excited to play, Pizza Tycoon and its little side arms dealing game was one of my favorites as a kid. fyi, I built from git source and it worked fine - seems just the AppImage build had this crash. Great work!

Dang I was really excited to try this, but it crashes as soon as I call the ice cream man 😭

Using the media pocket for growth media, I like it

I have some bad news for you about how innovative most of the programming we do as part of our day to day jobs is.

*sigh*

It didn't always feel like this though. The nature of it changed at some point, and it was all very engineered. Interacting with each other was always the carrot, but they wanted us to interact more with brands, and consume more media. Now we're mostly just gnawing on the stick.

James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 05/03/2026
At least we got some good media out of that whole situation

James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 04/03/2026
Here's my solution, I just assume both. Just because they're talking into an earpiece does not absolve them.
010
James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 03/03/2026
I don't think they skip it - it's the whole point. THEY won't be there, they'll have been raptured, it's all the rest of us heathens who'll be left to burn in living hell, and that's very appealing to them.

honestly, pxebooting netinstalls should be the norm, it would simplify things so much if the experience was improved a bit

Loved this movie growing up, it was on tv constantly growing up in the LA area. I always wondered if it got as much play outside of that area, most of the time when I ask people about it they aren't familiar

The industry was never comfortable with the idea that software could be "done". But sometimes adding more things just makes it worse. The infinite growth model we operate under in this industry is weird.

The website claims I failed to verify my ICANN email and that my registrar just needs to resend the email, but my registrar says that the domain has been placed on hold and that only cxDA (Christmas Island Domain Administration) has the ability to fix it, and they're ghosting me
100
James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 14/01/2026
The reason the site checkers disagree about whether it's up is that the domain seizure redirects to a page about ICANN verification failure, but that site is only hosted on http:// and not on https:// - so if you load doomscroll.cx you get content, but not if you load doomscroll.cx

Site's still down, Christmas Island NIC seized the domain and has been incommunicative. I'm working on some improvements to the site to make it clear to casual observers that we aren't violating anyone's copyrights and the site is legit before relaunching with a new domain. bsky.app/profile/bai....

Bugs the heck outta me too, especially for images. I went looking through the codebase at some point because I thought it would be an easy win, but I'm too stupid at React to make sense of it.
010
James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 31/12/2025
Yes indeed, Christmas Island seized my domain without any warning. Working to get it back now, otherwise I'll put it up on a less shady TLD 🙄 bsky.app/profile/did:...

James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 29/12/2025
Hooray, my registrar has informed me that it is not them who seized the domain, Christmas Island did it. On Christmas. So now I have to ask them to fix it. Guess they don't celebrate Christmas there 🤷‍♂️

Merry Christmas to me. doomscroll.cx domain was suspended due to some failed ICANN verification process. Working on getting it back online.

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

Yeah I'm gonna have to do some sort of last minute bulk export to at least get some representative sample to keep using in JanusXR. Annoying, but it was always the most likely outcome anyway, kinda surprised they lasted as long as they did.

(yes this practice sucks, but pinning it on "AI" and not on the marketers who decide to make the machine do this stuff to us is weird)

It's not called AI unless it comes from the Fearmonger region of Hypeland, otherwise it's just sparkling ML

The fun part about having a car with these door handles is, if you forget to lock it (or the sensor fails to auto-lock it), it's like a big sign on your car saying "hey, I'm unlocked, just reach out and grab me and you can have what's inside!"

And of course, to make sure private companies are applying these rules fairly in alignment with government decency and morality laws, they'll have to form a new government agency to control and regulate these prefilters, ensuring non-compliant speech stays safely contained. Quite simple, really!
010
James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 15/12/2025
Ah, see though, this is no longer the case. It's now perfectly feasible to have an AI pre-moderator trained on a set of rules that proofreads every post and ranks it based on its compliance with specific criteria, to decide whether it should be allowed or instantly rejected.

Agreed that the usability on this needs work. It's partly font selection, partly the fact that this is all rendering in GL, and partly the fact that the whole website is made out of doom assets loaded directly from the wad, and those textures aren't exactly optimized for high contrast legibility 😅
010
James Baicoianu @bai.dev · 14/12/2025
Hah - yeah, that shouldn't happen. I build weird websites though 😅 If you wouldn't mind answering a few questions maybe we can figure out what's up. What device are you using? Are you using a mouse or touchscreen? Do you have any gamepads/other game controller peripherals attached to your system?

Thanks! That was fun to make, it's actually downloading and parsing each wad as you scroll to create those previews. I tried rendering them into gifs but the gifs were bigger downloads and looked worse 😂
