Baffler management selected notorious union-busting firm Jackson Lewis as their counsel. BWU is represented by three long-time members of staff, and is affiliated with Workers United.

Later this month, we’ll mark one year since we first sat down at the bargaining table with management. We’d like to share an update on how things are going (1/4):

Management recognized Baffler Workers United last August, and we’re in our seventh month of bargaining on our first contract. We’d like to share an update on how it’s going! (1/5)
Baffler Workers United was recognized last August, and we had our first bargaining session in October. We’re still working our way through non-economic proposals, and are making steady progress.

As we prepare for our next bargaining session and to negotiate on the proposals to come, we are grateful for the points on which management has committed to working with us to craft language that will serve to benefit the organization in the long-term. But we recognize that we still need to move management on a few key points before we are ready to come to an agreement. Follow along here for updates as we push toward our first contract.

However, we have some concerns about several proposals from management regarding just cause, reductions in force, and management rights—language that we believe opens loopholes that undermine the job protections agreed to elsewhere in the contract and gives management the ability to make certain changes without bargaining or even notifying the union.

Management and Baffler Workers United are in agreement that employees have a right to work in an environment that is respectful and professional and allows for constructive criticism and feedback—vital for a magazine of ideas.

We’ve reached tentative agreement on more than half of our proposals and secured wins for our union by solidifying job protections from artificial intelligence, guaranteeing training for our job duties, maintaining flexible remote work schedules, and assuring a safe and respectful work environment, among many other things.

“If Condé can get away with this—and with President Donald Trump sabotaging the NLRB, the company appears to be betting that it can—it will send a message to unions and employers across our industry that the foundations of labor law are collapsing.”

White text on a red background reads: "As this process unfolds, we enter new territory for The Baffler but not for our industry: in unionizing, we will be joining our peers at outlets like Harpers, Jacobin, Jewish Currents, The Nation, The New Republic, The American Prospect, and New York Focus. We undertake this effort with optimism and in the spirit of consensus and solidarity."

White text on a red background reads: "The Baffler has grown over the last few years, with many new staff members coming aboard, and has developed a strong presence as a serious magazine of incisive ideas for the left. We believe unionizing is a natural next step in the evolution of the magazine. In doing so, we are motivated foremost by the desire to strengthen our organization through collective action and support."

We, the staff of @thebaffler.com, are proud to announce that we have formed a union with @workersunitednynj.bsky.social. Read more about why we have formed a union here: 1/4
White Text on a red background reads: "Since its founding in 1988, The Baffler has articulated an unapologetically pro-worker and pro-union politics in the reportage and criticism it has published. In seeking to reflect those values throughout the organization, we are proud to announce that we have formed a union as part of the Workers United New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board."
